I finished My Heart is a Chainsaw recently! What did you think of it/have you started the sequel?
I just finished it last night. I wasn’t really feeling the first half of the novel. I liked Jade as a character but she also felt so inevitably doomed that it was kind of bumming me out. An angry outcast lost in her escapism with suicidal tendencies - she’s a heartbreaker, and a wisecracker.
I’m still confused about the nail gun scene? (not to be vague, but I don’t want to post spoilers in case anyone wants to read it.)
I was impressed by how much things really kicked off when Jade wakes up on the boat! Holy shit what a ride. I think SGJ did tie all the lore from the camp and the town in really well into a cohesive night of chaos and terror beautifully. By the end of novel I still didn’t trust Letha, is that weird? Did you?
Jade’s personal history was much darker than I anticipated, omg my heart!
I have to confess as much as I love psychological horror and folk horror and werewolves (my beloved) I’m not too big on Slashers, but I did find this compelling and enjoyed the sections of Jade’s essays to Mr Holmes.
I loved The Only Good Indians, and Mongrels is my favorite by him and Night of the Mannequins (novella) is a fast read and very disturbing, I feel like for me My Heart is a Chainsaw is a solid horror novel with a new kind of final girl - which I respect and I did enjoy it by the end. However it’s not at the top of my SGJ novels for favorites.
I haven’t picked up the sequel, I’ll probably read a couple other novels before I do - but yes I will read the next one!
What about you? How’d your enjoy it?
