King Azaz - “Let Yourself Out”

King Azaz are the Philly-based duo of guitarist/bassist and vocalist Christo Johnson and drummer Sarah Schardt who are readying the release of their debut full-length Forever Green next week on Get Better Records. Their sound, as evidenced by the whirlwind of its first single “In June” and the recent grunge groove “Honey for Mud” is as messy and hard as any punk goes these days, and does so out of necessity in exorcising the bad energy out of your system.

The album’s final preview “Let Yourself Out” does its most to make sure that work sticks. “There is no promise / That friends will stay / I’m getting bored here, / It’s time to move away,” Johnson spews bitterly against the malaise surmounting around them rather then letting them becoming comfortably numb, and a dizzy of scuzzed out riffs as Schardt piles on into the open wounds keeps them on edge. That is to say if your surrounding are only going to burn you out, will yourself a way out.

“Honey for Mud”, the latest single from Philly punk duo King Azaz’s debut album Forever Green, hits the surface as a no shits given rager, but between the muck and the shouting, it’s easy to hear that vocalist and guitarist Christo Johnson and drummer Sarah Schardt craft each and every one of its moments with a go-big-or-don’t-go-at-all purpose. Spirited in the gnarly growl of bands like Pissed Jeans or early listens by the the Men where they had sharper teeth, the duo doubles down on cranked guitars, drum-heavy headbanging, and weed cloud distortion which makes their kind of rock music worship effortlessly dangerous. “A recurring nightmare / Of violence sets in,” Johnson snarls. “You are the omen / And I cannot win.” Even so, King Azaz can’t help but press the pedal to the metal down harder and embrace the doom.
