2015 San Diego Chargers Evalutations: Offensive Line

Well, this was the major sticking point of the Offense, which was unfortunate. The Chargers spent the Offseason last year trying to fix the OL and everyone sort of thought they had. However, the season proved otherwise. Let’s jump in.

On the Roster: King Dunlap, Orlando Franklin, Trevor Robinson, DJ Fluker, Tyreek Burwell, Chris Watt

King Dunlap: I think he tried to play hurt often last year, which shows his toughness but ultimately he was not the same dominant pass blocker as he was in previous years. That is a problem because the Chargers play in the AFC West. There are at least 5 great pass rushers on the 3 other teams in this division. The knock on Dunlap is his health, and his lack of health was a problem last year. 

Orlando Franklin: Well, in terms of PFF grades, Franklin had a 41.7 point swing in his grade... the wrong way. Seriously, he was a really good player for the Broncos, and when they slid him in next to Dunlap, everyone sort of assumed the left side was held down. That was not the case in any way shape or form. The entire OL failed to gel and never at any point run blocked well, and Franklin did pick up injuries of his own. 

Trevor Robinson: The Chargers had to move on from Chris Watt, at first due to injury and then due to play. Robinson was not better. The Chargers’ hope going into this Offseason is that the Center position was the reason why the entire OL failed to work properly. Center is an underrated position in terms of OL continuity. 

DJ Fluker: His transition to Guard was not smooth. Fluker’s normally good run blocking did not immediately come with him to Guard, but it wasn’t terrible either. I’d say it was about average, with unfortunately for the Bolts made him maybe the best run blocker they had at any position. He was also hurt this year.

Joe Barksdale: Good news, bad news here. Good news, he same in and really solidified RT, and he was pretty much the biggest success story along the OL this year. Solid pass blocking, a little below average run blocking, but he mostly stayed on the field and played well enough to not hurt the Chargers. Bad news, he was pretty much just an average OL, probably ranking 10-15 in RTs. He received a 4 year contract today.

The Backups: The backups probably played more snaps than the starters, and if not it was close. Chris Watt, Kenny Wiggins, Chris Hairston, JD Walton, Tyreek Burwell, Jeff Linkenbach, and Michael Ola all played for the Chargers this year. Watt (who was a starter to begin the season) and Burwell have contracts, none of the rest do. No one expects the backups to be good, but they were pretty bad. The Chargers will have a new OL Coach this year, and that likely has as much to do with the way the backups performed as with the way the starters played. 

Plan for the Future: King Dunlap and Orlando Franklin played the first years of brand new 4 and 5 year contracts, respectively, last year. They’re coming back, and likely both in the same positions. Dunlap is a good pass blocker when healthy, but is merely an average to below average run blocker. It would be a tough transition to the right side. Franklin likely stays at LG, because DJ Fluker will likely get 1 more year to prove himself at RG. The Chargers can’t save any money by cutting Fluker, they’ll lose cap space cutting Franklin, and the cap gain of cutting Dunlap is a little over $1m. So it seems like those 3 are pretty much locked in. That leaves C and RT as the only positions of change, possibly, for the Chargers worst position group in 2015. Stephen Wisniewski probably represents the best C in Free Agency this year, and he’s probably the 10th to 15th best Center in the league. However, the Chargers played with maybe the worst Center combination in the league last year, so that would represent a significant upgrade, and playing with an above average Center would likely help the play of both Franklin and Fluker. There are solid draft prospects at C as well, but the Chargers just cannot miss with whomever they get to play Center this year. 

The Chargers have secured the services of Joe Barksdale for 4 more years at $22.2 million with $10.5m guaranteed. It’s pretty much places him in the backend of the top 10 of highest paid RTs, which is only slightly above the level he played last year.
