Ah thank you for asking! It honestly means the world to have someone interested in my writing, so thank you. I really appreciate it.
However, as far as what the Edgar project is, I haven’t got much to say (yet). Basically, our final assignment for our Shakespeare class is to do a creative project over either King Lear or The Winter’s Tale, and so I was like, yes, I’ll do this over my boy Edgar because he’s got a lot of really interesting facets to him that would be fun to explore. Most *if not all* of my fiction writing is taking ideas I’ve found interesting in academics and then applying them in fictional situations, and so I was like, how hard can this be?
But that’s exactly where I’m stuck. He’s got so many interesting things about him that I’m having a hard time figuring him out now. He’s getting more and more confusing every time I read into him, but I suppose that’s all part of the process. For example, right now I’m trying to figure out why he uses the word “nursing” in Act 5, scene 3 when he says he’s nursed the miseries of his father - it might be that child/parent inversion thing, but it might be something else, and if it is that child/parent inversion thing then why take on the mother role? (And why do miseries need to be nursed?) - (Edgar and Henry both out here being mothers. I love it, those are my boys). That same speech makes good use of the word “burst”, which I might want to look into. Edgar’s got this kind of King Arthur, second coming from Avalon sort of vibe in this scene, but he also really doesn’t. The thing I posted with the Edgar and Cordelia lines is also something I want to look into regarding a linguistic item I posted about earlier today, in which Edgar and Cordelia are both referred to as “spirits”, which might provide a subtitle for such a section, if I wanted to fully flesh it out.
He’s also got a connection with nearly everyone in the play, so we’re working with a lot here lol.
But as far as the fiction portion I’m really not sure what to do. Do I look at a specific scene that he’s in and try and rework it? (I’m thinking it’d be the storm scene (3.4.) and we could figure out what Edgar and Lear are talking about “in private”). Do I work out the whole story from his point of view? Do I give him interaction with Cordelia? (I really want to, but I’m not sure how I’d handle it). And how on earth am I going to write this? Prose? Poetry? Play format? I’m totally lost and really not sure at this point.
But! It’s okay:) We’re all good. Deep breaths. It’s fine.
This probably isn’t what you wanted, but this is what I’ve got right now. This is where I’m at, and that’s okay. We’re working on it.
If any of you guys have writing advice, I’m all ears. I haven’t written a fiction project in like a year, so any help would be greatly appreciated :)
