King Marvin:

Miriam and her father was close when she was very young and he spoiled her very often. She was very much so a daddy's little girl. He was actually the one that got her into surfing in the first place, because in his youth he was a good surfer. But he stopped when the pressures of being king took over his life. He never really wanted the crown and sees it only as a burden. Though he does want to help his people he sees that the monarchy is not working, but doesn't know how to fix it. This pressure is quite a lot and he has aged at a very rapid rate because of it.

Soon after Miriam turned eleven he was diagnosed with depression and started taking medication. Though the pills do help him, they also changed his interaction with his family and has become quieter and more inwardly drawn than he was before. In the early days he was optimistic and outgoing, but this slowly went away as the pressure of the throne wore down on him.

He doesn't want to burden Miriam with this and put more pressure on her than needed so he mostly turns a blind eye to her acting out. He hopes that she'll marry someone more suited to the job so that she won't have to bear the burden alone. But this hope is slowly fading as Miriam seems to not be a fan of long term relation ships. This is one of the few things he hopes to get out of the academy, a suitable match for Miriam. He doesn't like having his daughter so far away and is distrusting of the academy because he doesn't trust anyone with his daughter. Even though he wants his daughter to marry for love, he knows this is not always possible.

Marvin's politics are very loose, he is very progressive and open to new things. Though socially the state doesn't have many issues, wealth is becoming a problem. The gap between the poor and the rich is widening and the poor are becoming poorer while the rich are becoming richer. It is a problem he can't seem to solve and it troubles him often. For foreign policy, he is very open and trades with all countries. The Western Republic is on good terms with every country around the world that he has come into contact with, with the exception of the Confederacy. That is the only country he can't seem to work with.

He maintains a faint hope that Miriam will heal relations between the two countries, but that doesn't seem possible. Miriam hardly gets along with Sam and Helena, though she does seem to be on better terms with Cornelius - that won't do much good as he's not next in line for the throne.

Marvin had one younger brother (by three years) whom he loved dearly and was very close to growing up. But as his brother hit the teen years he got caught up in the club culture and alcohol. Marvin's brother soon developed alcoholism and left his family soon after Marvin took the throne. They haven't talked much since then and Marvin's brother is regarded as a black sheep along with the rest of his family.

Terra and Marvin began their courtship at a late age, not getting married until they were both thirty. It was more of a relationship based on what was needed than love. Terra was a good match, and Marvin was a lucky break for Terra. Though they were fond of each other, they hadn't been dating long enough to call it love quite yet. But Marvin found himself with a throne and no wife to help him take care of it, so a girl like Terra was what he needed. And he's happy with her, his go with the flow attitude has helped him out immensely in this area. While Terra is always wound up about something, he calms her down and helps her sort through it rationaly. And while Marvin usually delays things for long periods of times, Terra gets him going and motivates him to get things done.
