Today is very special day for Lithuania. In 1253 July 6th king Mindaugas was baptized and crowned in Vilnius. Lithuania was accepted to western Europe. Unfortunately it didn’t lasted for long. King Mindaugas was killed and union broken. But his legacy - strong and united country remained.

Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania was under renovation and reopened in 2013 on the 6th of July in commemoration of the coronation of King Mindaugas in 1253.

Memorial for King Mindaugas and his wife Morta in Agluona, Latvia

Lithuanian King Mindaugas was murdered and buried in 1263. According to historians, Agluona was his place of death and burial. Also, Mindaugas’ wife Morta was a Latgalian. Thus the reasons for the choice of the place for their memorial.

Lithuanian Grand Duke Mindaugas along with his family and some nobles were baptised in 1251. In 1253 on the 6th of July Mindaugas was crowned the King of Lithuania. 

However, his baptism and coronation were merely strategical moves to stop the raids of Teutons. Mindaugas kept his pagan faith. According to the chronicles, he continued to practice paganism, making sacrifices to his gods, burning corpses, and conducting pagan rites in public. 

Medeina was one of the goddesses that Mindaugas sincerely worshiped. Whenever he saw a hare running around, trying to lead him astray during a hunt, Mindaugas would stop the hunt since it was taken as a sign that Medeina, the guardian of the forest and protector of animals, does not want him to hunt.

Later Mindaugas reversed back to paganism.
