A harsh punch to the stomach sent Kaiba collapsing to the ground, his briefcase falling out of his hand. Above him stood a bunch of men in black suits-- he hadn’t seen them, when he first walked into the alleyway.
Kaiba liked to believe all of his plans were foolproof, that he did everything with enough secrecy. That there was nothing his money couldn’t buy him, even if things did go south. It’s why he hadn’t feared enrolling in a public school, a decision he certainly didn’t regret when he found out one of the students was holding a rare card! That was another thing he thought would never backfire, wasn’t it? Trying to get rare cards out of people, by whatever means necessary.
He’d told Yugi over and over again that he wanted to see the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Understandably, Yugi was hesitant-- Kaiba would be. How frustrating. He simply had to earn his trust, that’s all. Considering he hung out with Wheeler, the kid must be desperate for friends. It’d take some time, and a lot of pretending to be nice, which sounded annoying... and that, perhaps, had revealed a weakness someone decided to capitalize on. In his school locker, he found a note from Yugi, saying that he’d give Kaiba the card, but only in secrecy. Oho... was Yugi planning to steal the card from right under his Grandpa’s nose? Kaiba would trade him anything he wanted for it. That’d why he’d brought his briefcase stuffed full of rare cards.
It was a trap. Yugi hadn’t written that note, and now, it seemed blindingly obvious.
“What should we do with him?” One of the men asked. “Hold him for ransom? Kid’s got a lotta money.” Kaiba struggled to get back to his feet, but another kick to the stomach rendered that moot. Ugh...! He couldn’t catch his breath, he felt so helpless...!
“Yeah. Hold him for ransom, get his little brother to pay it,” Another commented, stomping on Kaiba’s back to keep him pinned down. “Then we take ‘em both out in one fell swoop.”
“You--!” Kaiba snarled, despite knowing better. “You’ll never...! You won’t gh-- get away with this-- Leave him out of this...!” Of course, he knew why they were after him, because only a Kaiba could run KaibaCorp. Someone must’ve paid these goons, someone who wanted to rip his company away from him.
He wanted to say they’d pay for it. But right now, he didn’t know what would happen...
