TARON EGERTON [on making Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)]: I was 23. I was, and I still am, quite a sensitive thing. I found it hard: the pressure to get into really great shape, the pressure of what I always felt was quite a character part, and I suppose it was a tough time. I also broke up with my girlfriend at that stage, and she was… we’d been together for 2 years, I was 23, and it really did… it did what it does to a lot of people: it really tore me apart.
So it was a tough time…. There was one day where I did have a conversation like that with one of the producers, ‘cause I was in a bad place. I was around my 24th birthday — I was hitting it quite hard on the weekends, and also training, and then coming in and frankly looking like a bag of shit, really…. But I’m 30 now and I still feel like a kid. I was definitely a kid at 24, and I was releasing pressure the wrong way, and I quickly sorted my act out, but it was a lot.
Anyway, I don’t wish to paint a negative image of what making the first Kingsman film was like. Frankly, it felt like winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. It was absolutely amazing, and I still feel very proud of the movie.

I know that the only thing that’s unforgivable with Elton [John] is being beige and bland.
All that I care about is that I love stories. I love the relationships in them and various aspects of stories that I pay attention to or am attracted to. And they don’t really belong to a genre or style. And it’s not about the money. It’s more about the story that you’re telling.
