Attempting to translate klepto-maniac0‘s doujin

Hi everyone! In case you’re not aware, @klepto-maniac0 has been posting pictures of an FF8 doujinshi she recently purchased and even though I cannot read a single word of Japanese, I suddenly remembered the Google Translate app can scan text on a picture and attempt to translate it.

Needless to say, this being Google Translate, it’s very rough but it at least gives something close enough to derive most of the meaning from context, so I decided to give it a try, especially since I then remembered you can also draw kanji in Google Translate and then pick from a selection which one you want to translate, so I think I did manage to get a fairly accurate translation, at least in spirit.

Again, I cannot stress this enough, I cannot speak or read Japanese at all so don’t be shocked if this is inaccurate, and indeed there are some bits I’m not 100% sure about. I also didn’t go for a completely literral translation in order to add flavour to the dialogue.

If anybody who does understand the language is reading this, do not be afraid to correct me. Anyway, here’s my attempt on the first page (well, after the intro bits):

Title: In love

Irvine: “It’s crazy to think Squall turned out to be so lovestruck”

Squall: “What are you talking about?”

Irvine: “Seriously, there’s always somethin’.“

Squall: “Don’t touch Linoa! Don’t touch Linoa! DON’T TOUCH LINOAAAAAAAA!”

Irvine: “And then there was that one time.”

Squall: “I beg you! I need to get inside Linoa!”

Ellone: “Please don’t go...”

Irvine: “I'm sorry, am I bothering you?”

Zell: “You... you seriously pissed him off, for real. Think you could maybe take it down a notch?”

Squall: “(DAMMIT!)”

So how do y’all like it? It seems about right to me, hopefully its is at least somewhat accurate. The one I’m the least sure of is Zell’s one line as the app was having a hell of a time trying to decipher it and doing it manually didn’t help much. I got a different translation every time, pretty much.

Also, Squall’s internal scream translates literally to “MAKE IT BLACK!” which i’m going to go ahead and assume is a Japanese saying people use when they’re frustrated, so I feel “dammit” would be closest in spirit. Again, really hoping someone can confirm this.

Don’t know if I’ll do them all, especially since it’s a bit weird when I have no way of knowing if what I’m doing is correct or not, but it’s a fun exercise.

(Oh and one last thing, the app did translate her name as Linoa, with an L. So there)
