Sociopath Profile: Ragyo Kiryuin

For Ragyo, people are nothing more than means to an end. Her subordinates, innocents, her husband, and even her children. All of them are nothing but tools for her. She isn’t exactly empathetic by any stretch of the imagination.

Ragyo is known in the Kill la Kill fandom as the worst mother in anime. And not without good reason. She experimented on both her daughters and tossed her newborn infant out like a piece of trash after she was presumed dead from the testing. The surviving daughter, Satsuki, was molested by her for years of her childhood and continued to sexually abuse her in the current series.

She only married Soichiro for his skills as a scientist to experiment with Life Fibers and only considered her daughters as test subjects. This is shown when she dumps her infant daughter out like a piece of trash once she dies in the experiment. In the dub she says, “How could something with my genes be so weak?” And her tone of voice in both the dub and the original was that of indignation and frustration rather than the voice of a mother who just lost her child. Noticing how cold-hearted she was, Soichiro wasn’t happy in the slightest. So she has him assassinated to prevent him from letting anyone find out.

She is obsessed with dominating and controlling others. Sexually abusing her daughter is one of the more personable ways she does this. On grander scales, she is the CEO of a very lucrative clothing company known as REVOCS which serves to be a front for her more sinister plans. And that’s not to mention how she literally turns people into puppets using the life fibers.

And she is not above beating the ever-loving crap out of Satsuki once she tries to rebel. And after that, she finds her long lost daughter (the one who died) and then proceeds to rape and brainwash her into her servitude - which included sewing Junketsu into her skin. She is a stone-cold sadist and does not care one bit about even her own flesh and blood.

There seems to be an exception though with Nui. She seems to view Ragyo as a mother figure, and for the most part, tends to reciprocate that feeling. However, it’s rather ambiguous. Though you could say that she actually does think of her as her daughter since Nui also joined in raping Ryuko. She tends to engage in a lot of inappropriate behavior with her daughters.

However, that aforementioned threesome is implied to be an illusion implanted into Ryuko’s mind, much like the childhood memories she implanted while brainwashing her. But that does bring up the question as to why the heck a mother would want to implant a memory like that in her own daughter’s mind.

On the whole, she is incredibly cruel without batting an eyelash and does not give half a crap about other human life.

Life Fiber Hybrids and Kamui

Ragyo says that the Life Fibers in Nui were too strong to allow her to "wear" (or “be worn”) by garments made of Life Fibers. I wonder about that.

Let's take this as partially true – Ragyo's experiments were to create a more perfect and powerful kind of hybrid than herself. She succeeded with Ryuko and Nui.

Facts: (1) Ryuko never attempted to wear anything made from Life Fibers except Senketsu. (2) Senketsu was specifically made for Ryuko, using her own DNA. (3) Senketsu was Isshin's final creation, made well after he had left Ragyo. (4) Before her exact nature as a hybrid was revealed, Ryuko was stated to be abnormally resistant to Life Fibers.

Speculation 1: A perfected Life Fiber hybrid rejects other Life Fibers because the ones in their body consider their body to be themselves; the death of the body means the death of the incorporated Life Fibers. Therefore, to preserve the body, they resist the influence and drain of external Life Fibers.

Speculation 2: Ragyo and Nui never considered the possibility of creating a "fake" Kamui like Senketsu, spliced with Nui's DNA – which is plausible given their contempt for him. But perhaps such a Kamui was the only way Nui could have experienced Override or Synchronization.

EDIT:

Like a fool, I forgot that Ryuko was worn by Junketsu, a pure Kamui made without Satsuki’s DNA.

But one potential loophole is that Junketsu had fed exclusively on Satsuki’s blood up to that point, which might have increased its compatibility with her little sister. Indeed, they later used Ryuko’s blood as a way to pacify Junketsu for Satsuki’s use, possibly also increasing her compatibility with it.

Again, Ragyo and Nui would not consider ways to establish a dominant or equal relationship with Life Fibers, only ways to submit to them.
