Chez Nell, The Year Covid 1 update: Time to retire the blog hashtag “#i did not choose this wallpaper”, because now I totally did.
The process of removing its predecessor was brutal and expensive, and took the rental of a professional steamer and three days of my life. Mind you, I’m not showing the over-the-sink soffit, which STILL has not managed to give up on its wallpaper and I haven’t managed to finish.
The wallpaper is this amazing removeable sticker-type stuff. Blue Florentine. Basically, the style choices were entirely informed by the cabinets, which are still of a high quality, despite the blonde wood no longer being fashionable, and therefore I am unwilling to replace, and I wanted to be able to keep the light yellow on the wall that is painted.
I do not have a picture of the rooster chandelier with its prior lampshades, but they were a cranberry plaid, here I have covered the all-white alternate shades with fabric and some fun aerosol sticky spray glue. Pictures of Heir and Mr. Nettlestone can be seen on the shelf, as well as a Siamese cat with trippy jeweled eyes.
Please enjoy Lil Max’s face peeking into the refrigerator shot, as well as some Avengers protecting its contents. The rug was from Collections Etc, via Amazon.com, but appears no longer available. I got it in two different sizes, one also for in front of the oven.
After much back-and-forth agonizing over costs of replacing the drawer and cabinet pulls and the EXTREME costs in doing so (nearly 50 needed) for the ones I liked, I bit the bullet and ordered these instead, which shipped from India and say they are hand-done and painted. And were only $1/each instead of up to $4 each for others from US home improvement stores. They are entirely an assortment, which I enjoyed the idea of more and more. They’re porcelain and exactly what I wanted. (You can see one of the previous brass knobs in the lower shot). *The knobs I received did have enough that matched that all sets of two cabinet doors did get a matched set of two.
Along the wall with the cabinets, where a narrow channel of about 14-18 inches of wall is above the countertop, I used another design of the same type of wallpaper (I bought it locally, so I haven’t found it online for you).
The planters made me happy to find (from Lakeside Collection), b/c on closer look the rims are painted yellow, like the wall I wanted to keep, which felt like an affirmation of my choices.
TLDR, I chose my own wallpaper AND hung it up, I pivoted the blonde-wood kitchen into a sort of French Farmhouse, blue/white tile aesthetic, I’m extremely happy with it, and yes, if you see me on a Zoom call this will ALWAYS be my background.
Here are 2 great examples of how to make modern kitchens look vintage- use framed art, mason jars, open shelving, and other older accents you can find in flea markets and thrift stores.
