Seeking SciNote, Engineering: About Kite Tails
Question: Why does a kite need a tail? Asked by anonymous Answer: Most kite tails are not simply decorative extras; they serve to keep the kite stable and pointing in the right direction. Some tails keep the kite the right way up by making its back heavier, but most tails use a combination of weight and drag to provide stability. There are seven different kite groups, and flat kites are the only ones that need tails.

Some kites are bent or bowed, with their wingtips at a backwards angle to the spine, in order to be more stable. If the kite starts rolling to the side, the wing on that side presents a greater surface to the wind, increasing the pressure exerted on it and forcing the kite to return to a normal position.

Bowed, box, and compound box kites do not need tails because they have those angled wings to keep them upright; parafoil and sleds rely solely on wind to stay open so they do not need tails either; and deltas' sails form a billow that allows them to fly without a tail. Flat kites are the only ones that need tails in order to fly stably because they don't have any of those other features to keep them straight. So, when building a flat kite, make sure it has a tail. When my dad passed away five years ago I really struggled. The hardest part was not talking to him. He and I had talked daily so him not being there left a huge hole in my life. I had started seeing a grief counselor several months after he passed and I was explaining this void to her when she told me to just talk to him. She said pretend he is there and just say what…
