Several letters arrived at dawn, delivered by rats. A remarkable occurrence made more remarkable by the fact that each rat wore tiny armor and carried little needle swords.
If that doesn't grab you by the feet and drag you into this story I assume you probably only read mathematics textbooks.
This is a hilarious story with a buildup to a final joke about Kivan's dead wife that has to be read to be believed. It is also very sweet and emotional. I loved the way the story characterised Deheriana in the backstory.
Imoen curses Kivan as a prank. The only way to break it? Get Xan to smile. With the tactical precision of a man with a mission, Kivan executed absolute hilarity over the next day. With every quip, Xan sank deeper into depression.
