Could you please write something where after the death of her mother, Caroline tries to find a way to go in Hell for bringing her back, and she discovers then that Klaus is actually the king of underworld. Thanks
Just a bit late, sorry! But it did up being a fairly long one, enjoy!
IN WHICH THEY BOTH MAKE A DEAL…
They’re equally surprised to see each other when Caroline arrives at the gates of Hell.
“What are you doing here?” Klaus asks her, breathlessly. Before him she’s in tattered and burned hiking clothes. She’s bleeding and exhausted but her eyes hold nothing but resolve and anger.
“I’m here to get my mother back,” is all she replies with, and she fully intends for the dramatic statement to stand on its own. Until her typical rambling awkwardness takes hold. “And, no pun intended, but what the hell are you doing here?”
He’s standing behind the gates, having arrived in the terrifying whirlwind of a massive black winged guard, their dark feathers spread out to the full length of their wingspan just to intimidate her. At least a dozen winged demons accompany him but he waved them off upon seeing it was only her. He’d been alerted there was an intruder at the gates… dead supernaturals don’t come to Hell, they go to the other side. She isn’t supposed to be here.
Caroline is in awe at the site of him. He’s decked out in classic Greek armor but all a stunning and shining ebony black. And atop his auburn curls is a stunning golden gilded crown of leaves… not the kind she’s used to seeing in Ancient Greek clothing; if they weren’t crusted in gold they’d look almost dead.
“I’ve made a deal with devil, Caroline,” Klaus answers her finally. “You shouldn’t be here.”
“”Klaus, my mother is dead and I want her back. You are not going to change my mind about this so you might as well let me in now,” she demands.
He’s been looking mildly concerned about seeing her here since they first made eye contact but now he’s smirking, “And just what do you think you can do about it?” he asks her patronizingly. “Only one of us is on the correct side of the gate and I’m afraid it just isn’t you!”
She actually growls at him, sending a sharp pang of desire straight through his chest and down into his groin.
“I only had two ideas for how I planned to cope with this Klaus,” she tells him in a threatening tone as her eyes begin to well up with tears. “Either you let me in… or I’ll shut it off.”
Klaus only briefly considers the plan of pretending this threat doesn’t effect him. The moment he sees her beginning to sink into herself she hears him hiss: “Open the bloody gates now!”
Walking through the halls of his new place Klaus insists that she at least owe him an explanation and so Caroline tells him about losing her mother to cancer, about how she’s tired of living life for everyone in Virginia besides herself, how Elena was cut so much slack after losing Jeremy and she needs that kind of freedom right now too…
And Klaus could have given it to her. If he hadn’t thought he’d never see her again, gotten obsessed with his life in New Orleans as a way to forget her, and made this bloody deal with Hades himself.
Now, instead of freedom, he can only offer her captivity.
“Caroline, love, you should know,” Klaus begins carefully, “That no human life can be bought back permanently.”
“Bought back?” Caroline asks immediately.
“Yes, returning a life, even temporarily, always costs a price,” he said. “And… for a price, you can have your mother back for ten years.”
“Ten years?” she questions unbelievably. The prospect of being able to have her mother again for that long is inconceivable. She’d do anything… “And how exactly did you get this kind of authority then?”
Klaus coughs uncomfortably. Well if they were going to make a deal, he was going to have to his half of the story eventually.
“So, I made a deal with Hades…” he began. Caroline’s eyes flashed with disbelief again but she didn’t contradict him or interrupt so he continued. “I found a way to contact him and I made a deal. I told him I would come rule the underworld for ten years and, in exchange, he’s offered to protect my daughter absolutely for eternity. If anything should ever happen to Hope, she will never get stuck on the other side. She will always have the option of returning to life or to going wherever she chooses… even if that is passing on.”
Caroline bit her lip. That was quite a deal to make with the devil. She’d heard that Klaus had a daughter, it was only a rumor, one most people didn’t give much credence to. But apparently he’d gone out of his way to keep her hidden because it turned out she was real and here Klaus was, literally in hell, to protect the child’s eternal destiny. He’d secured his daughter’s absolute freedom as an immortal being.
“You know… I’m not with Hayley,” Klaus told her next, in a thick voice, desperately searching her face for a reaction. “Hope happened from a one night stand, I love her more than my own life but Hayley means nothing to me, it’s still you-”
“-I just don’t understand why Hades would want to turn the underworld over to you,” she interrupted, not wanting to get into the specifics of Hayley with Klaus.
Truthfully, Klaus hadn’t initially understood that either. It had been Hades’s idea. He’d only started to understand it when Klaus arrived to meet the God. He’d also met his lovely wife, Persephone… who desperately wanted to take her husband to see summer and the world with her for the first time. Apparently they’d been looking for a suitable substitute for quite awhile and they thought Klaus was the perfect candidate.
“Let’s just say that it turns out that everyone needs a vacation, love,” he said, dryly.
Once he understood, he was surprised they only wanted a decade. The only people older than the Originals were the Gods themselves. A decade was nothing for them. It would be a long time for him to give up his daughter but, now he had a new hope on the horizon…
“Alright, well, what is the price I have to pay to get my mother back for another ten years?” Caroline asked.
Klaus smirked, “I believe you’ve heard of Persephone, love?”
Caroline growled, “I am not marrying you!”
He laughed at her, catching her wrist as she tried to whirl around and storm away from him.
“Easy love, is that really how you think I’d propose to you?” he asked her, spinning her body closer so they were mere inches apart. “I think you know I’m a little more romantic than that.”
“What then?” she hissed.
“Six months,” he said. “Half a year, each year, for the decade I’m down here. You will accompany me and help me rule. Marriage is, of course, entirely optional.” He couldn’t help but chuckle at her darkly.
“If I spend half the year with you for ten years, it’s like I really only got five with my mother,” she said, pragmatically.
“True,” he agreed. “Unfortunately my ability to grant these types of gifts simply will not extend beyond my time ruling here. I’m afraid the bargain is one you’ll simply have to take or leave.”
Caroline fussed, looking around the halls of his palace, anywhere but him as she thought over what he offered.
“And I’m just here to help you rule… no like, dating or any funny business?” she asked. He smirked at her choice of words.
“No funny business unless specifically requested,” he said. Caroline didn’t look any more at ease. “You will, of course, have your own room.”
That seemed to do the trick. Truly, even five more years with her mother would be a blessing. If she had been talking to the real Hades right now, she might not have been so lucky. He might have just been annoyed and sent her straight to the Other Side.
“Okay,” she told him finally. She was looking at the floor so she didn’t see his jaw drop.
“Okay?” he asked, in awe. Just like that?
Finally, she glanced up to hold his gaze. “Yes, I’ll do it.” Five years with her mother. So what if that also meant five years with Klaus? In the long scheme of her immortal life, five years being Queen of the Underworld would probably end up being one of the cooler experiences she’d ever have, right?
Klaus smiled wickedly and almost triumphantly grabbed her hand.
“Alright then, love,” he said, kissing her knuckles before lowering her hand but continuing to hold it as he led her through the halls of Hades’s palace. “Let’s go fetch your mother.”
On Earth, Caroline discovers after she leaves Klaus, they are having the most wonderful year round Spring the world has ever experienced in centuries. Persephone is so happy to finally be able to show the world to her Hades after all this time.
And Caroline is thrilled to have her mother back. Liz is worried for her, though, when she here’s the cost of the next decade Caroline has bought for her. Even when Caroline is gone for each winter, Liz will still be living out her last ten years on Earth… mother and daughter missing each other dearly. It will be painful but it will be better than not having each other at all.
They spend their first six months traveling the world. Caroline is freer about using compulsion to get them what they want - plane tickets, expensive dinners, suites at fine hotels - but she doesn’t feel bad. Not only is this her chance to give her mother the best goodbye she can and make some memories to last eternity… Caroline reminds herself that she IS about to go be Queen of the Damned for the next six months. Being a little bad is practically part of her job description by now, isn’t it?
Before she knows it though, there first six months are up. It’s time to return to Klaus.
He’s been so anxious to see Caroline that he’s practically felt sick about it for the last two weeks. And of course Caroline waits until the absolute last possible second she has to be back before she’s set foot through his gates. He can’t be bothered to hide his unbridled enthusiasm.
“It’s wonderful to see you again love,” he says when she enters his throne room, not being able to help how his eyes rake over her lovely form. She smells like life, “Did you enjoy your time with your mother?”
Caroline didn’t know what she was expecting to return to… innuendos? Obnoxious grins? She hadn’t expected this.. empathy and carrying and genuine concern for her happiness. But she had such a wonderful few months with her mother that she can’t help but take a seat at the throne next to him and launch into her own tale about what they did the past season. He’s gazing at her adoringly, taking in each and every word she says.
He only has to hide his disappointment at the travel. Paris and Venice? He had desperately wanted to take her there.
And eventually their conversation shifts to life down here… what ruling is like, what will be expected of her. He’s not patronizing as he explains everything. He patiently answers all of her questions. It is such a good conversation that Caroline can’t honestly tell if her time down here will be that bad after all.
Over her season with him, Caroline finds herself truly becoming friends with Klaus. He takes her out of the palace and she’s seen some truly amazing things… enormous caverns with inky black waterfalls, beautiful but deadly lakes of lava that they can’t get too close to without feeling like their skin might burn off, and deep underground echo chambers where if you’re quiet enough you can hear the prayers of the dead.
She’s seen and heard impossibly horrible things too, of course. Things she will gladly never talk about or revisit in her mind again, if she can avoid it. But part of learning to rule Hell is learning which places to avoid.
Other than their time out, Klaus is nothing but exceedingly pleasant company. She finds him to be a fair and balanced ruler. Weighing the cases of certain soles and deciding where to send them to, Caroline and Klaus rarely find themselves coming into conflict over their ultimate opinion. He trusts her judgement implicitly and, over time, she starts trusting his as innately as well.
They also just have fun together. Klaus seems to think everything she does, even how she scrunches her nose when frustrated, is funny but it turns out that he’s pretty good at putting a smile on her face at well. Caroline fully anticipated spending as much alone time in her room as possible when she arrived but, Hell is a lonely place and she and Klaus seem to gravitate to one another anyway. They spend most of their time together. They never sleep in the same bed but they’ve spent many nights laying awake together for hours talking about everything until they finally realize the sun has already come back up on Earth where they used to live.
And her time with him is as wonderful as it was with her mother - albeit in an extremely different way - that the end of the six months sneaks up on her again.
Klaus, of course, ever the worrier, had been secretly counting down the days until she had to leave him while pretending to be solely happy the entire time. When she has to pack up to leave, does he detect a hint of sadness from her as well? He does believe they’ve truly grown to be real friends now.
As she passes through the gates to return to Earth she takes one last solemn look at him over her shoulder waving a genuinely sad goodbye. Instead of mimicking the gesture, he presses his lips to his fingers before blowing her a kiss. The sentimental gesture is so beautiful to her in the moment that it almost physically hurts and she has to turn away.
The entire trip home she just wishes she had kissed him goodbye.
Less than a week back with her own mother for their second season together, the real Royal couple seeks out Caroline to thank her. Caroline is awed by the real-life Persephone, an ethereal goddess and the personification of gentleness. Hades isn’t bad either, clearly dark and brooding and a total hunk just like Klaus but totally head over heals for his goddess. Hades has his eyes on Persephone at all times. He smiles when she smiles. Even Caroline can admit it’s cute.
She tries to tell them she has nothing to do with their vacation; Klaus made the deal, after all. She just got wrapped up in all of this for own purposes.
Persephone knows better because she’s been there before herself. As a gift to her friend and kindred spirit, Persephone bequeaths some of her magic unto Caroline - the ability to make nature flourish. She suggests that Caroline use it to spruce up the dreary palace walls when she returns in six months. The place always returns to its former cold feeling after Persephone is gone for any extended period of time. But Caroline will get to keep the powers for the rest of life, after the ten years and through eternity.
Her power is nothing like Persephone’s, of course, but it is still a beautiful gift. Caroline will always cherish it. Persephone kisses her fondly on the cheek before they leave, promising that they will visit each other again over the next decade when Caroline is not with Klaus. And Hades offers her a warm hug before following his wife with infatuated eyes.
Caroline decides to start using her new powers by building a garden with her mother. It will be a symbol of their time together that she can watch over and help flourish forever.
Of course Klaus has been counting down the days until Caroline could return. So he’s surprised when he actually senses her about two days before the start of their second season together… not technically winter since it’s February and Persephone is holding the world in perpetual Spring / Summer right now anyway.
Well, “senses” is the wrong word. Caroline makes her arrival known with quite a statement. He is awoken in his bed one morning by something brushing his forehead. Klaus opens his eyes to see… ivy? He sits up in his bed shocked. The whole room is overgrown from floor to ceiling like a jungle. Exotic flowers are hanging everywhere and ivy covers the walls like a beautiful wallpaper.
And sitting at the end of his - their? - bed is Caroline. She’s placing a loving kiss to the small pink bud of a flower hanging from their ceiling and it abruptly blossoms into a huge and brilliant purple magnolia. She turns to smile at him.
“So I’ve made a new friend,” she tells him coyly. “Persephone paid me a visit.”
He beams at her, letting his covers slide off of him to reveal his bare chest. His smile intensifies when he notices her blush and he swears that the flowers nearest to her glow a little brighter as she does.
“Well, you’ll have to show me all your fun new tricks,” he says seductively. Pushing himself up to reach over and pull her to him by the hand. She doesn’t resist.
They’re both happy to see each other, it’s more than obvious. So he’s only barely surprised when she places her lips to his in a soft kiss. She’s missed him too then. The softness of her is overwhelming and he’s caught up in having her in his arms again, humming contentedly. But then he notices something falling on his shoulders and back.
They both part to look up, cherry blossoms are softly raining down from the ceiling, seemingly appearing from nowhere. Caroline flushes with pleasure before tangling her fingers into his hair to pull them back together.
Klaus is sure, that by the time he’s done with her, they’ll be up to at least their waist in flowers on the floor. He wonders if Hades has this problem.
He sees a fallen Polaroid of a woman on the grass– her bright blue eyes speak of mischief and kindness while her hair remains a gold so much like the sun. As he bends down to retrieve the image, he hears a melodic laugh coming from behind him.
Turning around, his gaze locks on the woman standing across from him. Immediately, he knows– his Persephone stands just a couple of feet away from him tempting him without knowledge.
“My Polaroid,” she says as she moves forward. “You found it.” She adds, a smile playing on her lips
As she reaches over to grasp the edge, he moves it out of her reach and she looks over at him with confusion in her stunning eyes.
“May I have it?” She asks him, unsure of herself.
“Soon,” he answers before the ground opens up below them and he reaches for her, pulling her against his chest. “Soon,” he smirks just as her eyes close.
