sülz & klettenberg
Brandenburg-Prussia under John Sigismund and Frederick William I Those days Klettenberg opposite to Unterharz was a seat of Brandenburg. There, not far from the village Hochstadt, you could see a lake which was actually a sinkhole. Regional folks had a tale to tell. Once in the past, it was a grass pasture instead of the lake. Many stableboys grazed their livestock there. One day some of the boys noticed that one of them was having white bread. They also felt like having that and asked the boy for a share of it. The boy did not want to share while he was hungry and did not have enough bread for everyone. This angered them. They cursed the boy and swore at their master for giving them plain black home-baked bread. They threw own breads to the earth, kicking those by feet and lashing those by their whips. They saw blood oozing out of the bread. That frightened the servants. They did not know where to turn. Only the innocent boy swung himself up onto the horse and escaped the disaster that followed. Some say that an unknown old man arrived at the location to warn him. Others wanted to follow him but it was too late for them. They could not move any longer as the entire place under their feet suddenly collapsed. The bad boys and their horses were swallowed deep inside the earth and none of them could ever see daylight again. Some others tell a different version of the story. In the same lake grew plants with leaves which looked like horseshoes. * #Klettenberg was ruled by Hohenstein rulers till 1593 and then under Diocese of Halberstadt till 1648. Brandenburg- Prussia was ruled by Hohenzollerns from 1618 to 1701 and they gained some small territories like Lordship of Klettenberg in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 at the end of Thirty Year’s War. Hence time of the story must be after 1648. But which past this story is describing? That is difficult to answer. The reference to blood oozing out of #bread and #supernatural old man seems very much #medieval #Christian idea. #Folktale #germany🇩🇪 #german #sagen #grimms #sin #jealousy #god's will #punishment #God #reward https://www.instagram.com/p/CdcVEWTL6G6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
