Ye olde shooting out
Prologue
A scream permeated the night.
I sat on a perch above the dark alleyway where the scream originated from, observing the robbery between a dark clothed man wielding a gun and a woman who was on the ground, presumably knocked down around the same time the scream erupted from this alley.
“Your purse. Now,” said a man in a ski mask and dark colored clothing. “I can and will kill you if you give me a reason too.” Clearly this guy knew what he was doing. This probably isn’t his first robbery, as it sounded like he knew exactly what he was doing.
“Please,” the woman begged. “Don’t kill me. I have a dog and family and-“
“Just give me the god damn purse and you walk out of here alive” the dark clothed man said, in a rougher tone than before. He was clearly irritated with this woman. This probably was taking longer than he predicted he would, and if he didn’t hurry the police would be here soon enough.
After more exchanges of words between the woman and the robber, it was clear to me that the robber was getting more and more agitated and the woman more and more hysterical. I decided to end this little scene, and jumped down from the ledge I was sitting on to the alleyway below.
There was a light thud, and a surprised exclamation of “Oh shit!” before I rose to my feet. I wasn’t sure who was more scared, the woman, or the robber, both of whom were trembling.
“I think this has gone on long enough,” I said, trying to sound heroic.
Apparently it worked.
The robber quickly dropped his gun and turned around to run out of the alleyway, all the while repeating the line “oh shit”. I let the robber run, as it would be a waste of time to try and chase him through the crowded streets of Parkland. I turned to face the victim, still on the ground and most likely scared out of her mind. “You’re safe now,” I said, giving a thumbs up in case she wasn’t registering the words I was saying through her state of shock.
“What the hell are you?,” she asked.
I had prepared for this moment. The moment where my heroic saga would begin. The moment where my legacy as a superhero would start. I had dreamed of this moment ever since I was a child.
“I’m Knightboy,” I said, my words oozing with pride.
She gave me one of the most confused looks I have even seen on anyone’s face.
“You’re Nightboy? Like night time? Nightboy? Really?”
“No no, KNIGHTboy, as in like medieval knights.”
“That makes even LESS sense than Nightboy. At least there is some correlation between the time and the name. Knightboy just sounds stupid, like some hyperactive little kid’s made up character.”
Ow.
“Well Anyway I have to be off doing other…hero….stuff. Be more careful next time!”
I jumped up onto the ledge that I had originally been sitting on, then jumped to the building next to it. Clearly my introduction was going to require some work. Maybe a bit of flair. Whatever the case, the name was staying…even if it DID sound like some little kid’s made up character. A police siren rang out in the distance. No time to think about that now, I thought. It would be a long night, especially for my first excursion in costume.
