The North Island Kōkako (Callaeas wilsoni) is an endemic endangered and recovering species found in New Zealand with approximately 2000 individuals in total. All unmanaged populations in New Zealand, including the South Isand populations are extinct. They are characterised by their bright blue wattles found around the bill, and a haunting forest song.

Te Rae (female, orange band) and Chatters (male, red/green bands) feed their chicks on the Kawerau track - Kōkako mate for life and support their fledglings for a year. (video credit)
