Hey so I know the basics of kolab, and I definitely know the song, but I was just wondering if you knew what all was official doctrine and what was just tradition? Have any prophets said anything about it? Where did the concept come from in the first place?
Kolob first shows up in the Pearl of Great Price, specifically the Book of Abraham chapter 3:
3. And the Lord said unto me: These are the governing ones; and the name of the great one is Kolob, because it is near unto me, for I am the Lord thy God: I have set this one to govern all those which belong to the same order as that upon which thou standest.
4. And the Lord said unto me, by the Urim and Thummim, that Kolob was after the manner of the Lord, according to its times and seasons in the revolutions thereof; that one revolution was a day unto the Lord, after his manner of reckoning, it being one thousand years according to the time appointed unto that whereon thou standest. This is the reckoning of the Lord’s time, according to the reckoning of Kolob.
And it's not the only celestial body named there:
13. And he said unto me: This is Shinehah, which is the sun. And he said unto me: Kokob, which is star. And he said unto me: Olea, which is the moon. And he said unto me: Kokaubeam, which signifies stars, or all the great lights, which were in the firmament of heaven.
Now here's an interesting thing about Kolob, we often talk about it like it's a planet, but the text makes it clear that it's a star (or Kokaubeam)
16. If two things exist, and there be one above the other, there shall be greater things above them; therefore Kolob is the greatest of all the Kokaubeam that thou hast seen, because it is nearest unto me.
And that is just about everything we know about it. It's a star. It's near where God lives. That's about it.
Generally in the church we just use "Kolob" as a stand in for "heaven" but also not quite. "Kolob" kind of denotes a physical closeness to God's physical self. "Hie to Kolob" might as well mean "Go to Dad's house".
What surprises me about the concept of Kolob is that it's so well known within the church, especially considering that it comes from a few verses from our least frequented book of scripture (Pearl of Great Price is short, dense, and doesn't have any of those sexy war chapters), and a single hymn (which, admittedly, is a banger, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised)
