What looks to be a bamboo basket is really a construction of iron and copper wires. An exquisite metalsmith, Woosun Cheon creates nonfunctional vessels of various types through a labor-intensive welding process. The two-tone colors of the body come from a complicated method that, among other techniques, includes boiling the entire vessel in strong, dark tea. Young Jae Lee firmly restricts her work to ceramics for use, rather than sculptural ceramics. Her hand-thrown bowls and jars are inspired by both Korean traditional ceramics and Bauhaus ideas emphasizing the artistic exploration of everyday objects. You can now see this piece on view in “Made by Hand: Contemporary Korean Craft."

Happy birthday to Yoon Kwang-cho. In the mid-1990s, this pioneer in modern Korean ceramics extended his interest in Buddhism to the time-honored practice of copying the Heart Sutra. Worshippers copy this popular text many times in their lives to accrue merit for their next existence. Now on view in “Made by Hand: Contemporary Korean Craft.”

Young Sook Pahk has dedicated her artistic life to seamlessly recreating traditional Korean craft techniques and melding them with the contemporary. Now on view in “Made by Hand.”

5th K-pop Academy Week 6: K- Art

      In week 6 of the 5th K-pop Academy, we were introduced to Korean Boudoir Craft. As a guest, we had Kim Yu Jin, a Jogakbo specialist.

     Jogakbo is usually referred to Korean patchwork where pieces of colourful fabrics are sown together. As there were always pieces of fabric left from hanboks, women made use of them by creating different household decorations, accessories or even wedding gifts.  The principle of Obangsaek was used, ‘obang’ meaning five directions and ‘saek’ meaning color in Korean.

     The colors black, red, white, blue and yellow correspond to each direction: North, West, East, South and Center. For Koreans, nature’s hidden meanings were represented by these 5 colors, Obangsaek providing them order in their daily lives.

     For our class, we had to make a Jogakbo brooch by ourselves. We were provided with materials (colorful pieces of fabric, needles, threads, glue, brooch frame) and a sheet with instructions. Our guest and teacher, Kim Yu Jin, was really sweet and helped us when we got in trouble with sewing and arranging the fabric pieces.

      This is my brooch that I made in class… I must say it was quite hard (even if it looks super easy) to arrange and sew the pieces in a certain order and position.
