Lesson 7: This, That, The (descriptive modifiers)
What in Jimin’s Cheeks are modifiers?! Yep. I had no idea either, and my face was similar to that of Jimin’s mochi confusion as seen in the visuals above.
But they’re actually pretty simple. On their own, words like This thing. That thing and The item. are simply pronouns (and we’ll get back to how to say them as just pronouns later on in this post)
So if you friend asks you “which one do you want?”
and you reply “This thing”
You are just speaking in pronouns. A word that comes before a noun, and doesn’t include the mention of the noun (or what you’re speaking about).
Now that confusion is cleared up (was I the only one who was confused? hm. probably). Anyway now that MY confusion is cleared up, lettuce continue into the post.
Get it? 이, 저 and 그 work as modifiers, to modify the location of the verbs they are referring to!
Back to the pronouns: A fun skit.
But if we just want to use them as pronouns, we can’t just use them as they are.
it’d be like someone asking you, “oh which one?’
and they’re thinking “This WHAT? This...tree? This...floor...This thing right in front of me? This worm? This ASFSDLKJFSLDKJFSF!!??!”
and you’re like “no. this...thing. This item” *points to item*
and they’re like “OH great, see how much that clarifies when you USE YOUR PRONOUNS, AND GESTICULATION PROPERLY”
So yeah the addition of “거" (which simply means “thing” to the end of the modifiers makes them usable pronouns. That you can whip out in isolation, without having to know the names of the nouns you’re pointing to.
