First Meeting - Korrasami Month 2019
Asami chewed her lip, reading the expense reports, adding the numbers up for the tenth time in the futile hope that the sum would be different. The city was at peace, the interim government was organizing elections, the stock market was reopened, and Asami had reassurances that nobody else in the company—her company, now—was currently under investigation.
Everything was returning to normal—or settling into a new normal.
Everything except her own life.
Asami sighed, glancing out the window at the city sparkling in the night across the bay. She could’ve gone back to the mansion weeks ago, but every room in that sprawling estate held her father’s face, memories lingering, all of them leading to that moment when they fought, that impossible moment she realized her father, the only family she had, the most important person in her life for the past twelve years, was trying to kill her.
Instead, she had beaten him, captured him, turned him in. How could she move back home, when every room reminded her of that?
“Burning the midnight oil?” a voice asked from outside her window.
“Aaah!” Asami jolted, nearly falling out of her chair before her brain kicked in and recognized the voice. “Korra, what are you doing out there?”

How Korrasami Helped Me
Korrasami becoming canon was a major deal for me, one that I didn't recognize at the time. In 2014, I had watched almost all of The Legend of Korra episodes up until the end. At the time, I had a friend who was pretty insistent that I liked girls in one form or another, but I denied it. I was straight, no questions asked. And when she told me that Korra and Asami ended up together, I backed off the show... How could I like something that made me so uncomfortable?
I admit it, I used to be super uncomfortable when introduced to people in the LGBT community. I had multiple reasons. First, my hometown kinda sucked. Everybody there was a good, god-fearing, church-attending heterosexual who knew how to apply juuuuusst enough social pressure to get the youth of the town to behave, and misbehave, in ways they saw fit. Second, my family was (and still remains) really uncomfortable with the "lifestyle choice" made by homosexuals. (Basically, they didn't think gay people should really be together). Thirdly, I was suuuuuuuper closeted, so much that any mentions of homosexuality would drive me further into the closet because I was afraid of the side effects coming out would have (Plot Twist: None of my friends has looked at me any different. Most of them say it actually explained a lot about my personality).
Well, at that point I pushed Korrasami out of my mind and moved on to uni. There, I made multiple new friends and relieved some of the pressure my hometown put on my brain. And there I made a particular friend who would end up being the one to drag me, nearly kicking and screaming, out of the closet. This friend and I became close during my Freshman year of uni (during which I, at some point, went back and finished TLOK just to see if it really was true Korra and Asami got together). We stayed in close contact during our separation over the summer and came back to uni closer than ever. We did everything together. And suddenly, for me, our relationship became super unhealthy.
It started with little things. Being upset about her spending time with other people. Noticing how gorgeous her dark hair was. How much I wanted to be included in activities she was doing. Essentially, I had just this really strong need for her to be in my daily life. We started arguing, going through periods where we wouldn't speak to each other. Needless to say, something had changed that I couldn't put my finger on.
I was in a human sexuality course around this time and after the LGBT panel, things started to line up in my brain. Was I in love with her? Could I fall in love with my female best friend? Why did it hurt and suck so much? I started having major anxiety-induced episodes. My other friends became worried and urged me toward counselling, which i did in an attempt to reduce the attacks and still maintain that close friendship. I never brought up my questioning my sexuality in the sessions. I was pretty sure i was straight, so there was no need, right? (Wrong). I just had to learn to be her friend from afar and deal with the other emotions as they came.
Fast forward through another year, being in and out of counselling two more times for anxiety, the contiued stickiness of that friendship (not to mention her getting a boyfriend), and finally deciding I could have her or my mental health, and picking mental health. Somewhere in all of that mess, I realised I really was bisexual. I had loved this girl with all my heart and it nearly caused my undoing emotionally and mentally. I was going to have to find a way to accept the new part of myself, which meant overcoming a massive amount of internalized homophobia.
Around the time I realised I was Bi, I returned to the Legend of Korra and Korrasami. I rewatched all of the episodes and really payed attention to the women's interactions. I watched how Korra slowly fell in love with Asami and how genuinely pure these two souls were together. I could see myself in Korra's strong will and penchant for physical exercise and fun. I shared Asami's love of books and tinkering with things to see how they work. Both of these women embodied qualities of who I wanted to be, and represented the new bisexual side of me that i had not known about. The more i read about Korra and Asami, the more okay and normal it was for me to be like them. And somehow, through watching these ladies cope--through watching Korra go through mental hell and come out stronger--I found my will to emerge from my own personal hell. As long as I could read about or see Korrasami on Tumblr or Pinterest, and as long as I had my friends to support me, I knew I'd come out on the other side, fully embracing my true self.
Nowadays, I've fully embraced my sexuality and done away with most of my internalized homophobia. Surprisingly, that friend from uni and I are still friends, but on much healthier terms. We chat most days but live our lives on separate parts of the globe. And I've grown to appreciate just how much Korrasami being canon helped me come to terms with being bisexual. Korrasami was always a light on my darkest day and they give me hope that maybe, one day, I'll find someone to spend my life with.
Happy Korrasamiversary, everyone!
