NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i was so excited for it :’(
So was I! but my hope died in my hands not long after the film began. the script practically makes a mockery of itself with it’s horrendous pacing and in-your-face themes that amount to nothing ... and that’s just the start of all the thing wrongs omg
New ATLA/ LOK meta project announcement
Starting this Friday, I was planning to start a new project where I write a mini essay on every episode of ATLA and LOK. So, just to be clear, that’s 113 essays, on every episode from “The Boy in the Iceberg” to the last stand, of lengths that (out of the seven I’ve written so far) vary between 700 and 1700 words long. Technically, it’ll be slightly less than 113 essays, as I plan to do some episodes (mostly the multi-part ones) together, but hopefully you get the gist. Posts will go up on my blogger blog once a week, but I will link them from here, and probably post them here too, as I have actual followers who like Avatar on tumblr (hence my decision to promote one of my ideas on here for once).
I can’t promise that I will definitely finish, but having already drafted seven posts (in over 8000 words), I’ll give it my best shot, even if I get all of five (or less) people reading my posts regularly. However, I would love to try and get a good discussion going as I blog on the episodes, so if anyone wants to comment on or reblog my posts, please do.
Anyway, what I’m really trying to ask is: would this idea interest anyone?
Is it just me or did Asami get thinner in B4? Or is it the hair? Stress, perhaps? Or just a way to make her look "older"? I know my face got a lot thinner between 18-20ish. Thoughts?
Well…she certainly could have lost weight or just had her face get thinner in general. It’d be in keeping with how I’ve envisioned the three year gap (or just aging), which obviously isn’t gospel, but I think it’s relatively canon-supportive. And yeah, the hair change also could make her look different. Her appearance at the wedding isn’t markedly different than like S1:
(though if the height discussions taught us anything it’s that you can find caps that look one way or another from any season). So we could chalk a lot of it up to the hair.
But really…Asami became a bit of a facebender once Studio Mir took the reigns back. katabatics was kind enough to showcase just how variable it gets within one episode:
I don’t know why she is apparently so difficult to draw (those goggles really fucked with them)? There’s a whole lot of inconsistency. Book 4 was relatively uniform, but yeah. I can’t really tell if it’s the hair or what.

Yup, Wu and Mako are foils too (was gonna add that but didn’t have room)… so much going on there, every character is almost built upon the other. There is an insane, all-encompassing Book 4 character analysis waiting to unfold. It would need to be a group project, though, lmao
I ain’t opposed to nothin.

Welcome to the club… I’ve never shipped non-canonical relationships before, but my adoration of Wuko only grows stronger by the day. Like… in creating a foil for Kuvira and/or a comic relief character they unintentionally created Mako’s perfect partner. Made even more ironic by the fact they keep joking about shipping Mako with random women.
You know. If I was slightly more in the tinfoil hat direction, I would say they know exactly what they’re doing. Especially that last part (not that I want to abandon the best ship ever).
There’s also something to be said about Bryke’s use of foils in general (and the two types: the strikingly similar with one key difference vs. the totally different), and Book 4 is where it gets a little nuts. Kuvira was scripted entirely to be Korra’s foil, then Wu was built around that. And he and Mako can be thought of as foils too, especially taking backgrounds into consideration. Idk there’s a point here, but I’m not seeing it yet.

“In the comics Toph mended her relationship with her father. Something...”
It's not that simple in the comics. Toph does some awesome shit and saves tons of people. I recommend reading the comics before criticizing them. Then you can join the comic-bashing club
Gotcha. Was looking for some answers more than trying to criticize anyway. Though I’m always going to toss shade at Lao (#noshame). I may think he’s pretty fuckable, but really, really can’t get on-board with his parenting style.

Yeah, maybe there’s just a disconnect between what we’re saying. Of course she’s totally not above cynically manipulating him, as we see in 3x01. But there’s quite the difference between her motivations in this scene:
And this scene:
The former is far, far more ambiguous, which to me is where the intrigue is. It’s probably unclear because the focus in the scripting of that scene was on Zuko’s character moment and not hers? But to me, nothing’s “clear.”
