New ATLA/ LOK meta project announcement

Starting this Friday, I was planning to start a new project where I write a mini essay on every episode of ATLA and LOK. So, just to be clear, that’s 113 essays, on every episode from “The Boy in the Iceberg” to the last stand, of lengths that (out of the seven I’ve written so far) vary between 700 and 1700 words long. Technically, it’ll be slightly less than 113 essays, as I plan to do some episodes (mostly the multi-part ones) together, but hopefully you get the gist. Posts will go up on my blogger blog once a week, but I will link them from here, and probably post them here too, as I have actual followers who like Avatar on tumblr (hence my decision to promote one of my ideas on here for once). 

I can’t promise that I will definitely finish, but having already drafted seven posts (in over 8000 words), I’ll give it my best shot, even if I get all of five (or less) people reading my posts regularly. However, I would love to try and get a good discussion going as I blog on the episodes, so if anyone wants to comment on or reblog my posts, please do.

Anyway, what I’m really trying to ask is: would this idea interest anyone?

You guys, I’m on such a high right now, let me tell you about my amazing day

Ok so today I gave a presentation at university on Feminist Fandom and Cultural Criticism, covering various topics including a significant section on The Legend of Korra. When it was over my tutor said, ‘Um ... Erin, you have a thesis right there - get started.’ Now scheduling a meeting with her to discuss my eventual future as an honours student and the possibility of doing a thesis project which will include writing about Korra. THE DREAM IS REAL YOU GUYS queertoonqueertoons I quoted your “Significance of Korra” essay on one of my power point slides so I feel I owe you big time, thanks for all your amazing and inspiring work.

gifsandmusings yeah, I think you did. I was writing about the same thing - abuse of power - today in fact (not on tumblr).

Ha! I have the same problem. I’m Canadian, lived in Wales for a long time, and now I’m going back to the States... so my spelling is all fucked too.

Dude, this is awesome. Like way to go. You give me hope.

Thank you. I mean, somewhat more emphatically than I usually say it--I, um, don’t generally think of it as very inspiring. Honestly, I felt like a total and inexplicable failure for a lot of it. I don’t any more (my classmates could tell you that :P), but it’s something I very much carry with me. 

Sometimes I’m proud that I came out the other end better than I ever was before, that I got myself to where I am now; sometimes I’m still intensely ashamed and feel that I scraped through on luck and being perceived as bright. I know I come cross as the sort of person who always sails through academia, though it’s not true at all. (I just wrote a paper on how harmful that assumption is for many students with disabilities and some who don’t, actually.) I’ve been lucky at times, both in terms of sheer chance and in support I’ve found. I’ve also been persistent and stubborn in the face of a lot of awful shit, and I’ll take credit for that =)

I will say that grad school works much better for me. I’ve never done as well as I’m doing right now--like, not even in elementary school. And the funny thing is that if I hadn’t had such a rough undergrad, I would never have come to the program I’m in. And I really like it--I admire my professors, I like most of my classmates, it’s a small program where it’s like ... lbr few of us come from money, most of us have floundered in the past or are floundering right now, we help each other out. It’s not one of those places where everyone is clawing their way up and stabbing each other in the back. Our professors do a lot less of separating out the chaff and more of trying to help everyone get through, while particularly encouraging the handful with an obvious vocation. I’m glad to be here.
