Kotoyo of Tenjinshita 1908
KOTOYO god I like… never draw him ever.
It’s excessively weird to draw him without his stuffed cat toy.
COMMISSIONS ARE OPEN PLEASE REBLOG THE COMMISSION SHEET IF YOU LIKE MY WORK AND WANT ME TO KEEP MAKING THEM. ONLY GOT THREE COMMISSIONS SO FAR (AS OF 11-1-19) SO IF YOU’RE THINKING ‘SHE’S PROBABLY GOT TONS SHE’LL BE FINE’ YOU’RE WRONG.
Momoko and Kotoyo from Shinbashi, ca. 1890. Momoko is a popular girl’s name and common geimei even today. Kotoyo is rather rare, but just last year, a Kotoyo debuted in Sapporo! I always find it interesting how some names stay popular over 100 years (there were four different Momoko in Kyoto in that timespan alone), and some just sound incredibly old-school and are rarely used (like, names starting with “Kuni” 國/国/くに , which have only remained in Shinbashi).
Sapporo, September 2018: from left to right: Chie, Koume, Kotoyo. You can see that Chie and Kotoyo tied their obi with a tsunodashi knot on the second picture. Sources. First picture, second picture.
New Geigi and Hangyoku in Sapporo
On 1st June 2018, two Geigi (Kotoyo こと代 and Chie 千恵) and a Hangyoku (Koume 小梅) debuted in Sapporo.
In the 1950′s, there were around 300 Geigi and 40 Ryôtei in the city of Sapporo, but like in so many cities, it all went downhill during the economic crisis in the late 80′s/early 90′s. Only ten of them were left last year until the foundation of an association to support new Geigi financially (a wardrobe of Kimonos and the lessons are expensive!) and thus, the Sapporo hanamachi gained four new Members this year!
The fourth one is called Miko but I don’t know the kanji, if she is a Hangyoku or Geigi and she seems to have debuted separately from the other three.

These children drove me crazy but it's finally done. 8D
Crona took Ko out to get ice cream. That simple. Should not have taken me this long, especially since I decided to do chibis rather than attempt anatomy, but... well I wound up attempting some semblance of anatomy anyway. And everything wanted to be hard. EVERYTHING. I had to completely redo both their feet, lengthen their skirts, fix Kotoyo's hair and eyes, add in Reiko, fix Crona's dress cuffs, and move them both so they actually give the illusion of standing on the same platform instead of Ko sort of... floating next to Crona.
Crona, your hair continues to baffle me. Like, jesus, child. And the worst part is that his hair would be so much easier if only his bangs were even! I mean, I probably still wouldn't be satisfied, but at least it'd look a little better!
But if his bangs were even, he also wouldn't look like the Crona we all love, so... I guess I'll just eventually learn how to draw them. Eventually. ^^;
Oh god I finally got off my butt and did this.
Here's Kotoyo with Reiko! Decided to make her a calico because my brain hates me and wants me to have to draw all those patches I didn't want it to be a plain color.
