Halifax's new Art Gallery of Nova Scotia It was recently announced KPMB Architects with Omar Gandhi Architect, Jordan Bennett Studio, Elder Lorraine Whitman, Public Work and Transsolar are the winners of the international design competition for the new Waterfront Arts District.

We are so proud of the Destination Project – Isttaniokaksini Science Commons in Lethbridge, AB, Canada. Working together with KPMB and the design team the architecture is amazing, but the comfort concept with its center piece being a central plenum - as a kind of mixing chamber - we think is pretty smart ;) So, it’s the way how we combined the various program areas - as integral part of the architectural approach (using buffer zones) - became the interesting part of this project… climate is very cold in winter, very windy and fairly hot in summer (but not humid)...

Art galleries consume significant amounts of energy for lighting and to meet the requirements of temperature, humidity and air quality to comply with standards for conservation and to avoid any risk to the artwork. Nonetheless, well thought-out architecture and technology make it possible to comply with the requirements while at the same time having minimized energy needs for operation. It is mandatory that the concept is adapted to local climatic conditions.

At the Greenbuild 2023 Conference in Washington, DC. on September 26, Erik Olsen and representatives from Boston University, KPMB Architects, and BR+A Consulting Engineers come together to describe how the complexity of our climate challenges require deep collaboration to translate inputs and insights into precedent-setting solutions for the design and delivery of a high-performance institutional building.

In 2017, Boston University’s Climate Action Plan set a goal to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2040, 10 years ahead of the city’s goal. Shortly after the plan’s approval, construction began on the University’s newest project–the Center for Computing & Data Sciences. What is now the largest sustainable, operationally fossil fuel-free building in Boston, this 345,000-square-foot vertical campus rises over the banks of the Charles River dramatically re-shaping the city’s skyline.
