Cross Street is widely recognised because of its distinctive “skyways” built in the 1960s, which allow pedestrian access between Karangahape Road (K Road) and the Cross Street/Mercury Lane car park.
When the motorways were put through Newton Gully, retailers on Karangahape Road were worried that the removal of local residents would affect their business. This and the combination of increased private car ownership and competition from suburban malls diverted customers away from the area.
Banding together, local businesses George Courts, Modern Bags, McKenzies, Pascoes and Rendells organised the finances to build the car park building, selecting a site directly behind their stores. A significant part of the design were several skyways allowing pedestrian access to and from their premises on Karangahape Road.
There were four skyways in total, including one that connected to the Rendells Department Store and one that connected to the Modern Bags building – a new construction designed with a shopping arcade, which had internal links into the McKenzies store to the east and the George Courts store to the west. Another private skyway connected the Barker & Pollock department store to their warehouses on the south side of Cross Street. Three skyways remain today.
It might be logical to assume that the name of Cross Street derives from its function as a service lane between two major roads (Upper Queen Street and Mercury Lane), but it is actually named after a Doctor Cross who owned farmland here and probably subdivided it in the 1880s.
This is an article from 1973 that attempts to tenuously connect the skyways with the "Bridges of Venice." Sourced from K Road Heritage.
Holy Moly! It's been quite a while since I have posted anything. But that's because I am a Dad now. Between work, raising kids and attempting healthy amounts of sleep. I have been a bit tardy.. certainly not very errant. But now have a new job, in a much more interesting part of town. So I thought I would get back in to documenting scenes I enjoy. So here are a few snaps from Auckland's infamous and very well loved Karangahape Road and adjacent Ponsonby Road.

I love these sunny and peaceful mornings in the middle of town, enjoying the combination of hustle and bustle and rustic autumn leaves over Myers Park. Monday Usual Freshly made chicken wontons in master stock, with bok choy, fried shallots and garlic oil; pickled green chilli with light soy on the side. The usual Chicken Wonton Soup at Sri Pinang, K Rd. There is only one subject of conversation - the major fire at Sky City Convention Centre. The city skyline has a pall of dark smoke and the air is polluted. There are some diners at Sri Pinang who has walked from the city as the streets they live at have been closed. The Chicken Wonton Soup is exactly what Uncle wanted. It’s a constant, a comfort soup. #chickenwontonsoup #sripinang #kroad (at Sri Pinang) https://www.instagram.com/p/B36hOPfJI-X/?igshid=7jgq1wp104fh
