Steve Rude's homage to Jack Kirb'y's and Joe Sinnot's cover of Journey Into Mystery #83, the first appearance of The Mighty Thor!
Cover of the Day: What If? #10 (August, 1978) Art by John Buscema and Gaspar Saladino
This is gonna take an hour for me to type i feel like I'm going to collapse
I don't expect this to get through because its still fucked up out there, but I need someone to see this
Thank god for the zoom in feature!
Who ARE these guys?! New England is not known for this shi- Well maybe the Barney and Betty Hill thing..
Just a sec. Let me consult with a few folks on our team because I don't recognize them from the image you sent.
...Okay. Yeah.
So those are Kronans, colloquially known as "Stone Men from Saturn" thanks to tabloids reporting on their appearance, despite hailing from a solar system far from our own.
Very little is known about them, and what we do know comes via the word of Thor, who was the first individual on Earth to engage with this species. They seem to have a rock-like physiology, although whether they're a silicon-based lifeform is unknown.
(artist's rendering of a Kronan)
In one of Thor's earliest outings on modern-day Midgard (possibly even his first), he engaged with a Kronan invasion force attacking NATO forces in Norway, and drove them away from Earth.
This, presumably, was enough of a show of force to keep them away, as unlike the Kree, Skrulls, Cotati, and other alien species, the Kronans have largely stayed away from Earth ever since.
And, truthfully, that's the case for most alien species. The universe is a big, big place and Earth is very small (despite recent efforts to increase the Sol system's prominence in intergalactic politics, and the outsized impact of Earth-born individuals on interstellar crises). There are plenty of extraterrestrials, who, like the Kronans, have come to Earth once or twice and never returned. Those who have any sort of relationship with humans, whether friendly or antagonistic, are very few.
