author’s note: i apologize that the prologue is extremely short in nature, i didn’t want to spoil too much but i also wanted to give you a look into the world and story! if you’ve read any of my other fics, then you’ll note that the writing style featured here is different than my other works. this is because of the mystical and magical nature of this story. i wanted to use words that would properly capture these feelings throughout!

The birth of Spring was a magnificent affair.

In the rich, gilded halls of the palace, Spring was born. Pastel fabrics were draped across balconies, blossoming flowers were twined around the marble architecture, and sweet fragrances floated in the air with twining smells of lavender, jazmine, and rosemary. Instantly, the baby was swaddled in silks and showered with attention. She had no need or want of anything, and from then on she would grow to know who she was and her importance.

In contrast, the birth of Winter was rather sordid.

In the dark, crumbling walls of an alley, Winter was born. While some claimed that the birth of a fourth season, one who would bring about death and misery, was purely accidental, this was not so. For the fates of the universe knew exactly what they were doing when they placed a fourth god in the world, one who would be raised shunned by others for the season that he would bring about as his destiny required of him.

Born on opposite sides of the kingdom, it was a cruel sort of destiny that bound the paths of both gods together despite the rigid dichotomy of their situations.

It was also that cruel, cruel fate that would bring the pair together for the rest of their lives —  only to rip them apart again and again.
