Lesson from Ben Ruiz.
I’ve told this before, but I keep thinking today about Ben Ruiz, my life drawing teacher at @thekubertschool. Ben was watching me do a figure drawing in charcoal. Lots of ambiguity, smearing the charcoal around with the side of my hand. Bathing the drawing in murk, getting artsy.
He asked why I was drawing like that. He’d asked for a simple, diagramatic depiction of anatomy. I said I was trying to be expressive. Ben took a beat, then said “Steve you're here to accumulate knowledge. You're a first year art student; You have nothing to express but your own ignorance."

My best work from animation class at the Kubert School
Tex Blaisdell
Philip "Tex" Blaisdell: born March 30, 1920. Assisted Will Eisner, Hal Foster, Stan Drake, Leonard Starr, and Al Capp. Drew Little Orphan Annie, Popeye, & more. Taught for a long time -20 years?- at The Joe Kubert School.
Tex was bright and funny and larger than life, with an endless supply of great anecdotes and cautionary tales. I only knew him during my time at school, 87-90. He died in 1999.
I wish I could just walk into the kitchen at the Clinton House in Dover, NJ right now. See him there hunched over his lapboard, smoking an unfiltered Camel. Say hey, and throw him a question, and just listen to him spin out a story.
