Today is #WorldPartyDay! Whilst parties feel like a thing of the past now, we hope it's not too long before we can start celebrating together again 🎉
This lively scene gives us a peek into a Japanese calligraphy and painting gathering, or a 'shogakai'. Shogakai were held in cities all across Japan from the late 18th century, with the very first thought to have been hosted at the Manpachirō in Edo, depicted here. At these gatherings, renowned artists and calligraphers would create improvised works as guests gather around and watch. These served both as social gatherings, as well as ways for artists to advertise and sell their works.
This ukiyo-e print, 'Calligraphy and Painting Party on the Upper Floor of the Manpachi Restaurant' is by Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865).
