The Birth of Japan, Kuniumi   ~ the Eight Islands ( Part 1)

In Japanese mythology, Kuniumi, literally meaning "birth or formation of the country." It is the traditional and legendary history of the emergence of the Japanese archipelago, of eight islands, as narrated in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. According to this legend, after the creation of Heaven and Earth, the gods Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto were given the task of forming a series of islands that would become what is now Japan. 

In Japanese mythology, these islands make up the known world. The creation of Japan is followed by the creation of the gods (kamiumi). Before the Eight Islands were born, the first crippled child born, Hiruko (later known as 'Ebisu', the god of good fortune), was carried away on a reed boat, and then Awashima, and again he seems to have been a crippled child. Neither Hiruko nor Awashima is counted among the children of Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto.

~ 大八島の国 (その１)

国産み（くにうみ）とは、日本神話において、古事記や日本書紀に語られている日本列島の誕生にまつわる伝統的・伝説的な歴史である。この伝説によると、天地創造の後、伊邪那岐命（いざなぎのみこと）と伊邪那美命（いざなみのみこと）の神々は、現在の日本を形成する一連の島々の形成を任された。

日本神話では、これらの島々が世界を構成している。なお、国生みの話の後には神生み/神産み(かみうみ)が続く。 二神は、最初に生まれた不具の子である水蛭子神（ひるこのかみ、のちの福の神 ’恵比寿神’）を葦船（あしぶね）に乗せて流してしまい、次に淡島（あわしま）が生まれたが、またしても不具の子であったらしく、水蛭子神（ひるこのかみ）ともども伊邪那岐命（いざなぎのみこと）と伊邪那美命（いざなみのみこと）の子供のうちに数えられていない。
