Sunayu is a place along the shoreline of Lake Kussharo, a caldera lake. It’s known to have hot springs just under the sandy beach, so if you dig up the sand, hot spring water will come bubbling up. In fact, there’s a public and open hot spring bath that you can soak up in, right by the lake. Normally bathing suits are not allowed in hot spring baths (onsen) in Japan, but they make an exception for this location since it’s out in the open. . This warm water from beneath heats up the surrounding water by the lakeshore, which keeps this part of the lake from freezing up in the frigid temperatures of winter, thereby attracting a lot of swans to come and rest here. .
