The Moon on a Rainy Night by Kuzushiro
The main character of A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace is totally sapphic btw. I looked up the real mangaka behind the original work, and she writes a lot of yuri, so it's definitely not an accident that the main character of this work says things like this.
With the last month being consumed with the work of moving apartments, I haven't had as much time to read — but when no-one's got me, yuri manga's got me. The Moon on a Rainy Night is a lovely, quiet series about the increasingly-romantic friendship between two high school girls, one of whom is hard of hearing. Her disability is presented with a lot of care and nuance, and you can tell Kuzushiro is trying really hard to neither condescend nor glamorise. It's just something Kanon constantly has to deal with, and Saki's eagerness to accommodate it is at first resisted, then gradually warmed to, then hungrily embraced.
I'm sure a lot of people would find the romance unbearably slow-moving – eight volumes in and they're still like, "argh! what are these feelings??" 😂 – but it's just such a sweet little story. So much of love is about accommodating what another finds difficult, helping them fit around the world. Kanon's deafness is just one form of this, which is why it never feels tacked-on to the story. The work of love is always specific, and always this.
Kuzushiro (The Moon on a Rainy Night) dropped an adorable horror yuri one-shot in this month's issue of Yuri Hime!
