6x12 - “You are a serial womanizer who dates a string of toothpick-sized women. I’m a recently divorced non-toothpick-sized mother of two. My life is messy, it’s complicated, and it’s hard. And you spend your life avoiding those things. So I’m gonna ask you again - what are you doing?”

Every Record I Own - Day 703: KXP History of Techno
Russian Circles played a small festival in Luxembourg back in 2015 on our European tour with Helms Alee in a big building that felt like some re-purposed military complex. We “headlined,” but as is often the case with these kinds of European festivals, there was a band that played on a smaller stage in another room after our set as a kind of “afterparty” show. It was some Finnish group called KXP who wore hooded robes like SunnO)), but instead of playing doom/drone, they played this propulsive and intensely rhythmic mash-up of krautrock, metal, and minimalist electronic music. The drummer would lay into a sick dance beat while his two bandmates dug into some hypnotic riff or metronomic synth line and they’d let it ride out into these protracted long-form club bangers. It was late in the night and everyone in the room was three sheets to the wind, and consequently the normally stuffy post-rock crowd let their guard down and started dancing their asses off. Bought this LP from the band that night and learned a short while later that they share members with revered metal cosmonauts Circle. It should come as little surprise given the title of the album, but History of Techno leans more into the electronic side of the band as opposed to the metallic sound that initially lured us in. But there’s still a solid motorik groove to the material and a “live” feel to the performances that makes me feel like I’m back in that tiny room in Luxembourg watching these hooded figures induce these throbbing trance-inducing bangers to an ecstatic crowd.
