the kya comic is just around the corner now, so it's a good time to consider the importance of having a comic dedicated to kya and the value it adds to korra's story.
adding more scenes of korra's recovery isn't gratuitous and it adds extra layers to her journey that kya was an important mentor and support during those difficult moments. especially, it adds to existing moments in the comics.
in the original series, there isn't really any scenes that indicate kya and korra have a strong connection or even know each other particularly well.
thus, the moments where kya is picking up on korra and asami being a romantic item, and giving them The Big LGBT History LessonTM can feel a little bit abrupt. and while it's wonderful to see an older canon wlw character support the main character's new wlw relationship, it can feel a bit like kya is just put in there almost like a token lesbian, given that kya and korra didn't have any established mentorship relationship.
well, the new comic gives them that. kya was there to see korra in some of her loneliest, most helpless moments, and was there to remind korra about the importance of connection and hope.
this adds so much to this moment.
this isn't just a moment of going like "hey guys, you know what, GAY RIGHTS". this is a beautiful moment of kya, after seeing korra in the deepest pits of despair, finally seeing korra making connections and finding happiness, and once again being able to remind her of the importance of community.
