Looking for facial symmetry can be elusive and challenging and superfluous. Very few faces have full facial symmetry, it’s the rare one in a million supermodel that is born with it. 👸🏼👸🏻👸🏾For most of us, the facial skeleton is shaped asymmetrically, muscle forces create differences, and gravity and far pad changes cause shifts in the facial landscape. I love beauty and symmetry, but I a big believer in unconventional beauty. Beauty standards are created by society. Evolutionary notions of beauty are etched into our subconscious minds, and symmetric beauty has been a way to interpret health, genetic success, and mate selection for procreation. In the modern age, modern beauty dictates no such boundaries. New studies show that a certain amount of directional asymmetry - where muscles pull or accentuate certain features is often interpreted as more beautiful than a bland, templated exact symmetry. Often, a slightly imperfect, asymmetric face is more lively and pretty. I encourage all of my patients to find their own definition of beauty, and out down the magnifying glasses and rulers.
