this is part of an au I've been really absorbed in lately, so this is quite longer than most other stuff I do lol
Irma burst through the doors, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. Donnie chuckled.
"You haven't told us how you--"
He sent them a glare, effectively cutting them off.
She sighed, slumping over a little. He sped up and got in between her and them. She slipped him a grateful smile. They made their way down the school steps and onto the sidewalk without anyone talking to them.
"Not a problem, Ju," he replied. "You wouldn't mind if I took you to my house today, would you?"
She widened her eyes and turned to him. "Um... no, but are you sure that's okay? From the stories you've told me about your dad--"
"He wouldn't do anything," he dismissed. "Not while I'm around."
"Why do you want to take me there anyway?" she asked.
He glanced at her before swerving onto a crosswalk. She didn't realize until a foot away.
He laughed. She elbowed his side.
"Now answer my question!"
"I just want to show you something I think you'd enjoy."
She hurried to catch up with him. He eventually turned, leading her into an apartment building. They went up the elevator to the third floor.
"303. Make sure they don't slip past your feet, they love trying to escape," he said vaguely.
They approached the door. He gestured for her to open it. She placed her hand on the handle and as soon as it was open an inch, a small, pointy nose poked out. He blocked it with his shoe. She hesitantly opened it more.
Whatever creature it was shot out. She yelped, stumbling backwards and falling. It ended up in her chest, staring directly into her eyes unblinkingly. He reached down to pick it up before extending his other hand to help her.
"Sorry, but I did warn you."
She eyed the... thing curiously. "What even is that?"
He nudged two new faces away from the door. "I'll explain it inside."
She slipped in so another didn't get the chance to leave. Donnie dropped the one in his hand, letting it skitter off somewhere.
"You can help yourself if you're hungry. My dad's probably not here after all anyway," he offered.
"I'd rather know what launched itself at me first."
He twisted his head to her. "Understandable, but they'll be crowding around you soon, so do consider getting a snack."
She approached the kitchen. She was a little hungry...
A green blur flew out of the fridge when she opened it. It landed on her face this time before sliding down. She reached up and carefully tried to help it get down. Sharp pricks stung her when it dug its claws into her skin.
She sighed. The fridge was empty anyway. She headed back to the living room and slumped down on the couch. Donnie wasn't there like she expected.
He appeared from a separate hallway, still rubbing his hands together. "Sorry, bathroom. I see you found another one of them."
"It won't let me go," she huffed.
He chuckled. "They do like new people. Want me to help?"
She glanced down at it, now curled up on one of her legs. "... No."
He sat down next to her. "I thought so. He seems to like you, anyway."
She tilted her head curiously. "This one's a he?"
"Yeah. Apple's already claimed the other," he replied.
"Do any of them have names?"
"Only two, mine and Leo's," he answered. "Mossa was the one that tried to escape earlier."
"Is she yours?" Irma asked.
He rolled his eyes. "Don't look at me like that. But, yes, she's mine."
She gently rubbed two fingers down the little creature's back. "And what did Leo name his?"
"Kype?! Are you serious?!" she laughed. "What kind of a name is that?"
"He said he wanted the name to mean something," he shrugged. "So he combined 'Kris' and 'type'."
She hummed. "You know, that... actually makes sense. Do you know what Apple named hers?"
He opened his mouth to say something, but Mossa darted in and landed on his lap. He stared down and she stared right back up with sparkling eyes. He narrowed his eyes.
"What did you break this time?"
She snuck her phone out of her back pocket and stole a picture. He turned his gaze to her.
She groaned. "It was just one photo! You guys are cute!"
