Es lo único que quería, cada vez que me iba.
Que lo digas, verlo en tus ojos.
Y, sí, mi por siempre eres tú, por supuesto que me quedaría por siempre.
You ARE the man.
No pienses "I'd be the man", mi amor. Tú eres the man.
You are the man.
Well, as we kick off a new year--and as we end one of NXT's semi regular episodes that ALMOST feels like an all women's show--it seems as good a time as any to post my annual top ten list of my favorite women wrestlers in the business not currently signed to the major American promotions. As usual, I make no claims to these being the BEST talents in the business, just that they are my favorites. And I figure I should post it now, because some of them may not be free agents come February, and I don't wanna have to do any more revisions. (I've already taken Mercedes off, expecting her to be somewhere soon...)
11) Taeler Hendrix
Okay, this year we’re starting with an honorable mention. But I wanted to recognize one of my top two indy heels of all-time for working her first match in over four years last summer, after a freak at home accident caused nerve damage to one of her hands. I will forever maintain that perhaps the biggest mistake that TNA ever made that didn’t involve Hulk Hogan was having her under contract and booking her as a face.
10) Sandra Moone
Slipping two spots this year has less to do with her and more to do with people who came back onto the indy scene after releases, contract expiry, or retirement. But she remains one of the most magnetic presences to emerge on the scene in recent years, equally adept at working face or heel, technical or hardcore, one of the best at intergender. She’s only getting better.
9) LA Taylor
The Demolition Woman. Discovered her over the summer, and she quickly became my favorite monster heel on the scene. Good presence, phenomenal size, certainly imposing but still knows how to sell, and sells how a monster should. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her work this year.
8) Zoe Lucas
I’m still just a sucker for her snotty princess, I’m-better-than-you-and-it’s-a-priviledge-for-YOU-to-get-to-watch-ME-work sort of heel that she EXCELS at. Part of me is intrigued by the possibility of her being able to bring her Dream Dollz partnership with Mariah May to a major stage. Part of me wouldn’t wish an AEW contract on Cheerleader Melissa or Shazza McKenzie, the twin banes of my fandom. 😊
7) Allie
Free at last! Free at last! Once upon a time arguably the most over woman on the Impact roster, then subject to years upon years of horrible booking from people who didn’t have the first clue what to do with her, punctuated by the occasional bit of bad luck. Can’t wait to see what she gets up to this year.
6) Deonna Purrazzo
I should probably get this list published quickly, because she’s not likely to be on the open market for very long. Arguably the best in-ring talent in the game today. She made great use of Impact, to show the world what she was capable of after a fairly lackluster run in the WWE system under the previous regime. She’s on record that WWE was always “the Dream” for her, and I’m sure she’d love the chance to go back under the new management and maybe have a better go of it. Chelsea Green being one of her best friends probably doesn’t hurt their case, either… but she’s also extremely tight with Britt Baker. I expect one of those two companies to snap her up pretty damn quick.
5) Charli Evans
The Death Match Goddess. Knows no fear, will go to any extreme… but with a more than solid classical ground game. With apologies to Shayna Baszler, an absolute submission magician.
4) Mina Shirakawa
There are no words for how much I love her. She always had the charisma, but her in-ring game has come SO far in the past couple of years. I’m still holding out hope for her venturing west, because I feel like her work would VERY easily translate to a North American company.
3) Raychell Rose
I gotta be honest, I’m kinda surprised that the Queen of House Rose isn’t in NXT already. Still probably my favorite emerging heel on the indy circuit, even if I still wish she had a more striking finish. Would loooove to see her and Roxanne Perez run their feud back on a bigger stage.
2) Tenille Dashwood
I’m throwing her in here even though I’m not 100% convinced how much longer she is for the business—she does seem to be increasingly branching out into other ventures, WWE was the goal and she’s now had two pretty snakebitten runs there. Of course, she could just as easily turn up at Hard to Kill in a couple of weeks—as far as I know, things ended amicably with her and Impact last time, and she was on record enjoying the more relaxed schedule that allowed her other opportunities. Pity things never worked out with her in the E, though—she truly was one of the pioneers of their modern era, and that first TakeOver match with Paige NEVER gets its proper due.
Ariel
I almost put her back on the list last year, when she came out of retirement late in 2022… but as much as I hoped and prayed that return wasn’t a one-off, I wanted to make sure. While it does seem that most of the Queen of New England’s work on this run has been as a heel, for me she will always remain THE quintessential babyface of the indies. But she’s still been killing it.
