My student is culturing the cancer cells in the lab on her own today:

student: Hey! I calculated the number of flasks that I need to make, and it is more than 200!

me: That's impossible!

student: That's what it is with 10.000 cells per flask...

me: You should have 10.000 cells per cm^2 not per flask. 1 flask has 75 cm^2, so it's 750.000 cells per flask.

me: 😆 200 flasks is quite a bit overkill. I am glad you asked and did not go for it.

Lab Project

Right now I’m doing a project on micelium growth inhibition in Botrytis cinerea by the use of extract of Aloe barbadensis. This experiment has been a success so far. We found an experiment that touched the subject on a similar manner, but we decided to add another variable, which is the spore production. You see, Botrytis reproduces asexually, as far as I know, and the fungus seems quite easy to classify and isolate. I am eager to know how this will turn out!

I have a presentation of my lab project today. I have to speak in front of lecturers and PhD students who know this stuff. On April Fools. And my biggest fear is speaking in front of people.

SCIENCE PROJECTS OF THE NOT-TOO-DISTANT FUTURE Astroengineering lab assignment: Make a simple wormhole.

First construct nodes for your wormhole. This may seem obvious, but it's often overlooked. Don't restrict yourself to Euclidean space.

Stand carefully to the side and a little bit back.Now open the wormhole and stand back. You have your safety goggles on, right? Use of a flame hood might help at this point. [See the picture.]

Step behind the open wormhole.  Not in front. Never stand in front of an open wormhole. Grab the wormhole and pull with moderate force, stretching it out.  Connect to each of the nodes in turn. Try not to break it.

EXTRA CREDIT: Open up more wormholes inside your wormhole. Be careful not to create any infinite loops. You may wish to review the material on Calabi–Yau manifolds at this time.
