aigues-mortes.
today, our group took about a 30-minute bus ride to a town called aigues-mortes. this town is significant in french history for a few specific reasons. the shores of the town, reaped a major salt harvest every year (and still does to this day). salt has been the only way to preserve food for thousands of years, so these huge harvests of salt created a "gold mine" in the south of france. it was their first major port city where they exchanged tea, spices and herbs with other people from around the world. also, the king (not sure which) prosecuted over 500 protestants, some men but mainly women, in his main tower of the castle, during the crusades.
we walked around the entire exterior of the town (about 1.6 km), and witnessed some stunning views of the land around the town. inside the walls of the castle, lies the town of aignes-mortes. its a small, quaint town with its own resources for survival. the town is absolutely lovely, and it looks like a neighborhood out of a european folklore. it seems like only elderly people live within the walls but the original buildings and homes have been perfectly preserved (i'll post pics of what i mean).
anyway, today's excursion was cool to see business and church intersect and how the connection has lasted all these years. it feels good to have a real taste of another country's history for a change.
P.S. the american civil war is referred to as the "guerre de la secession" which means war of secession. just a quick tidbit. au revoir!
