I spent more time than usual making this MerMay. I was trying to conceptualize how to combine symbols of peace with the mermaid, and while researching, I found this image of a metal wall décor of a mermaid among birds. This turned out to be the image of La Sirene, from Haitian Vodou, a venerated Loa (or spirit), the dove of which is its bird. I made an illustrated version based on this. Not sure though, if the birds are actually doves, but what the heck. Mami Wata,o Mama Wata. Mami Wata es una deidad Africana y vive en el agua. Se asocia con una serpiente.

En Cóptico Mama significa conocimiento y sabiduría mientras que wata es océano. Se le representa como una sirena, una encantadora de serpientes y se utiliza la imagen de Santa Marta Dominadora. Vive en el fondo del mar. Mami Wata no es La Sirene en Vodou, tampoco es Yemayá u Oshún. Sin embargo puede asumir cualquier forma o representar cualquier deidad.

Se cree que Mami Wata es una amalgama de deidades del agua. Los Indios Nativos de Estados Unidos la adoptaron e incorporaron otros espíritus de agua. Dentro del Sanse Puertorriqueño está representado bajo la división de las Metresas. Pero por ser una deidad del Agua, puede estar representada en la División de Agua.

Today, I went and saw my husband and my mother. LaSiren has been on my mind for days, and, after dreaming with her and waking up with her songs in my mouth this week, it was time to go see her. Mèt Agwe gets the first Sunday of each month from me as well, and I try to do something special for him then. So, kismet.

The beach was FREEZING and there was plenty of snow on the ground, but it made me giddy to go. When I got there, a few people were walking the shore but they evaporated. It was just me, Agwe and LaSiren, and the seagulls, who watched me carefully and closely, maybe to bring back messages to Imammou and my husband's ears.

The sea was gray--we are expecting a lot of snow tonight--but the water came up to kiss the flowers and fruit as I set them out and prayed, and the sea drank deeply of the fresh water and champagne poured for the benefit of love.
