It’s about 7pm and I’m in lab at my office desk/bench. Taking a break to read a news article about Russia.
My labmate starts reading over my shoulder cause he’s rude like that, and comments, “You know, Putin actually gets stuff done though”. This started a pretty heated conversation that ended up with him saying “Yeah well, Putin kills gay people but the US has the death penalty. They kill people too”.

I asked in front of everyone, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”. Whatever your feelings on the death penalty are, that’s not even close to the lgbtq concentration camps in Chechnya, not even addressing the fact that everyone in Chechnya is innocent?? Normally I wouldn’t advocate speaking to someone like this in front of all of your coworkers, but I mean.....what the fuck IS wrong with you??
The cherry on top is he is a immigrant from former USSR territory. I feel like your ancestors would be rolling in their graves, but I guess homophobia is a powerful motivator.
