Now we the American working population
Hate the fact that eight hours a day
Is wasted on chasing the dream of someone that isn't us
And we may not hate our jobs
But we hate jobs in general
That don't have to do with fighting our own causes
We the American working population
Hate the nine-to-five day-in day-out
When we'd rather be supporting ourselves
By being paid to perfect the pasttimes
That we have harbored based solely on the fact
That it makes us smile if it sounds dope
Aesop Rock - Labor Days
Aesop Rock is one of those rappers who doesn’t get too much attention outside of people who are really looking. I’m not sure he’s ever had a top twenty song but he’s music is so incredibly lyrically dense that it’s hard to not appreciate the attention to detail and bar perfection he’s consistently put out there. This album is absolutely my favorite of his and it’s filled with so many songs that paint these insane stories or argue these insane points.
From songs that go over the life of hermit artists to arguing against all the cringe ass rappers who think they’re here to “save hip hop,” it’s hard to not agree with or at least see Aesop’s perspective. On top of that he did a really good job at not just picking beats but integrating his lyrics and performance into the beats themself. Just a really fucking solid hip hop album. Not a lot of flash or special flare, but this bare bones album doesn’t need the extra meat. This is the bone broth of albums. I’m not sure where I’m going with this but you should absolutely check this dope shit out.
if the revolution ain't gon be televised then fuck, i’ll probably miss it
Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman. You only call her a bitch 'cause she won't let you get that pussy. Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests. Or maybe you're just an asshole. Who couldn't sweet talk the princess.
All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day Put the pieces back together my way
Happy Labor Day, and a friendly reminder that we should be having Labor Day on May but aren’t because of the US government wanting to fuck over worker solidarity.
Tho, IMO, the solution should be less to switch Labor Days than to make two labor days, one now and one in May, because more Labor Days is always a good thing...
