Jamie goes to get his children and Murtagh. Jenny had let them know that all is well but nothing else. They had explained they wanted to tell them about the twins, themselves.
“All is really alright, papa?”
“Aye Fergus, your mama and siblings are doing well.”
“She screamed so loud, I thought…?” Bree trails off, her face flushed. Her da wraps his arm around her.
“I did also.” He confesses.
“Grandpa Murtagh promised all would be well and it is.” Rory looks up at Murtagh with shiny eyes.
“We must have faith, my lad.”
“Aye, are you ready to meet the babies?” He asks them all. Huge smiles and nods all around. He opens the bedchamber door and leads them in.
Claire lays on the bed, a baby in each arm.
“Mama, you are well?” It isn’t that Bree didn’t believe it. She just needed to see it.
“Yes, my darling. I am fine.”
Rory holds tight to Murtagh’s hand as he studies his mama and new siblings. She smiles at him, beckoning him forward. He walks slowly over with his siblings following. “Mama, are they..?”
“Come meet your brothers.”
“Lads!” He calls out.
“Aye, they are lads.” His da says with pride. They watch the look of disappointment run over Bree’s face before it clears.
“Congratulations mama and da.” She comes up and looks down at her new brothers.
“Congratulations Mama and papa!” Fergus joins her and smiles down at the bébés.
“Brothers! Two new brothers!” Rory comes to the other side. His eyes sparkle as he glazes down at his brothers.
“What are their names?” Murtagh asks. He looks over the children and at the bairns.
Jamie picks up the first born, cradling him in his arms, “Meet Lambert Henry.”
“And William James.” Claire adds, holding the twin up so they can see him.
“Perfect.”
“After Uncle Lamb and granddad.” Bree breaths as she comes up to her da and touches her brother’s tiny foot.
“Willie, you named him after Willie.” Murtagh softly says, his eyes teary.
“We did.” To his daughter. “Aye, I wanted to honor your Mama’s family.”
“May I hold him da?”
“Aye. Mind his head.” She sits in the chair and he slips Lambert into her arms.
“Fergus, Rory, would you like to hold William?” They look at each other.
“Fergus, you go ahead.” He is nervous. They are so wee.
“Ouí.” She hands William to Fergus. “Look at you! So much like papa, Rory and, Bree.” He is overwhelmed by the emotions of holding his newest brother.
“You, little Lamb, are mama.”
Claire laughs. “Isn’t it wonderful!”
“It really is.” Rory comes up and looks down at the baby his sister is holding. His grin gets wider at the sight of his baby brother. He puts a hand out and Lamb grabs his finger.
“He has me!” His parents smile. “Hello, I am your big brother, Rory.”
Fergus passes William to Murtagh. His throat gets tight. The memory comes. The look on Brian’s face as he holds his lost son, as he watches his wife, die. Jamie, around Rory’s age, running away as fast as he can. Finding him, sitting on that log, inconsolable. Though he tried. The promise he made to look out for him. A promise he has kept and will keep for the baby he holds and his brother. “William James Fraser, I am your Da’s Godfather. As I swore to him, I swear to you,” Bree raises and lays Lamb in his arms also. He smiles at her. “and to you, Lambert Henry Fraser. A promise to be by your sides until you are men grown. And after, if you have need.” Claire looks at her family through a film of tears. Jamie draws Bree and Rory to his side. Fergus comes up and takes his mama’s hand. No one spoke as Murtagh pledges himself to the twins. It is to sacred to be interrupted.
“You are of my blood, family. There will never be a time you will be alone or have a need that I won’t try to help with. You are named after strong men and will grow up to be strong yourselves. For you have Mackenzie, Fraser and, Beauchamp, blood in you.”
Everyone seemed to catch their breaths after he finished. “You will be their Godfather, won’t you?” Jamie asks through his tears.
“You must!” Claire adds.
“They must have the same as us.” Bree agrees as Rory nods his head.
“Ouí, my brothers need to have you also.”
“I will be honored. Of course, I will.”
He lays the babies back in Claire’s arms when they start fussing. She places them on her breasts.
