LADYMEME: Devasena and Draupadi!

DEVASENA

I’m not as annoyed by the way the narrative treats her as by some of the other examples (except…. this is not saying a whole lot) because the way the final battle is presented as Bhalla vs Devasena showdown rather than Mahendra vs Bhalla, regardless of what’s physically happening. But. Let her fight post-interval, film! I mean, I know she’s either pregnant and/or incapacitated from years of malnutrition, but that’s no reason that once her husband is dead, she should need her son to come back and save her (which really incorporates a gross “a woman needs a male relative to protect her,” smh). So, yes, give Devasena the chance to end Bhalla and Bijju’s miserable existence herself like she deserves.

DRAUPADI

SAME, but even worse. In the original Mahabharata, Draupadi loses many of the fiery speeches that she gets in most adaptations. GIVE HER THE CHANCE TO  DEFEND HERSELF–or, make at least someone other than Krishna actually listen to her anger and her grief : one of the saddest scenes in the entire Mahabharata is her miserable speech when the Pandavas, after everything that’s happened, are considering peace talks (I say this as someone who is usually  pro-peace and sympathize with the need to avoid the disaster the war will be–but at the same time, I can also understand Draupadi’s hurt and rage when it seems everything she’s worked towards for 14 years is for nothing.

And let’s be real, Avantika deserved to be the hero of the present-day scenes: she’s the one with (a) a clear goal (b) the desire to achieve it © and the talent to actually achieve it, as opposed to Shivu. I mean, when you have to randomly write her out with a twisted ankle, of all things to give Shivu even a shot at playing the hero, you know you’ve written yourself into a corner.

But more than that (and this is going to be a tangent, sorry) I’ve come to realize that what I really love that whereas the present-day sequence is all about genetics being everything and the throne being a stock reward that you are given rather than a responsibility you must earn by having….actually aptitude for it, the flashback subverts these and other annoying cliches of quest fantasy (and this is an entirely different rant I’ll hold off on unless asked.). So why not have a version that say, continues that? Where Mahendra/Shivu is perfectly happy to be living in his fishing village, and feels bad for Mahishmati and his mother but is smart enough to know that he can’t help much by blundering into its midst (or...he can tag along, but not somehow steal the entire quest from the woman who’s been working towards it for her entire life just by being male and/or the genetic offspring of royalty.) And where Avantika, instead, gets to be Amarendra’s true heir, by idealism and merit and virtue (and you can’t tell me gender would matter!)

LOL well I am so mad about Dee that idk how this is going to go but let's get started.

NOTHING WAS EVER ABOUT DEE, that is my biggest complaint. Every plotline that involved Dee was really about how other people felt about Dee or how Dee made other people feel about things (see that whole "Dee guilts Adama into returning to New Caprica" bit) or she was the token Sagittaron who wasn't like the others or whatever but like EVEN THE PLOTLINE ABOUT RACISM AGAINST PEOPLE LIKE DEE WAS ABOUT HELO'S FEELINGS AND NOT ABOUT DEE I am gonna be mad forever.

HOW DOES DEE FEEL ABOUT ANYTHING no one knows because no plotlines are about Dee.

Dee gets dragged into ridiculous romantic plotlines which are of course ALSO not actually about Dee and fandom is busy either treating her like shit for marrying Lee or treating her like shit for not marrying Billy like what a terrible person for refusing to commit to someone she didn't love??? Fuck you???

LMAO I am too mad to write coherently about Dee and it's been like 6 years since I watched bsg.
