Not sure if this went through the first time so trying again. I work at a small animal exhibit at a nature center and we have a 9 yo female chin. She has a running wheel, a bath house and lots of platforms to jump around on in her cage (approx 3x2x4.5 high). I was wondering what other sorts of things you'd recommend for enrichment and such. Also training tips?
Oh fun! I'd love to have a job like that, it must be great! I have some ideas, I'll leave some links at the bottom of this post to websites where you can find some of these suggestions.
For starters, how about some fun hanging toys to chew on? Ones with bells are usually enjoyed by chinchillas. Or toss-toy chews. Does she have any huts? Fleece-y places to snuggle up in? Hammocks? Sometimes chins like fleece tubes as well.
I think that pretty much sums up what fun things you could get to make a habitat more fun. The only fabric she should be exposed to is fleece, it's the only fabric that has not proven to be unsafe to chinchillas. Try to avoid using plastic items as much as possible, too much chewing of plastic can give a chinchilla cancer. Chinchilla safe woods and materials can be found here. (That is also a general chinchilla info page, feel free to flip through for anything else you might be curious about, this is one of my most trusted sources.)
As for training tips, may I make one big suggestion; don't give up. Whatever you are trying to train her to do, work with her daily, be very patient and don't be frustrated if she doesn't get it right away. Use treats, but not many. Rosehips are the best for training, I believe. They can have more rosehips than they can any other treat in one day. Most treats are limited to strictly no more than one per day, but a few rosehips are okay in a day.
