RE: Labyrinth Fics
I should preface this by saying I read Jareth/Sarah shippy fics almost exclusively.
Authors that have stood out: PaisleyRose (I've liked everything I've read of hers, though I haven't read even close to all of it); Lixxle, who is much more on the humorous end of things; KnifeEdge (though the reason she stands out might be because I read in several of her fandoms); and Cyprith's one-shots.
Fics that have stood out: Talespinner; Bodice Ripper--which I can't pin down why exactly I liked it so much; Erlkonig, which makes me shudder just thinking about it; and also one where Jareth disguises himself as a professor and Sarah kind of falls in love with both versions of him and there's also other mystical people and it's great and the name of it will not come to me and I'm pretty sure it's not talespinner, but it also could be because I do have a hard time keeping my fics straight. And I know there's more that I just can't remember.
I recently read The Goblin Market, which had both good and bad aspects to it. The mythology stuff, the character development, and the plot twists were spot-on. Some parts of the relationship between J&S got boring towards the end. It just felt like, haven't we dealt with this yet? Let's move things along. The fic as a whole felt lacking in actual contact between them. Anyway, that was recent, so I thought I might as well mention what I noticed in that one.
General Likes/Dislikes/Dos/Donts:
Yes Please:
Sarah being quippy
Jareth/the Goblins messing about in Sarah's every day life
Still-young post-Labyrinth Sarah. (I once read an incomplete fic where Jareth was causing shenanigans for Sarah almost immediately after she leaves the Labyrinth, in school and stuff, and I haven't seen anything much like it before or since)
PEACHES. I'm not picky about how it's done but yes give me all the peaches pls
Toby growing up
Old and new Labyrinth friends/ Goblins
bamf Goblin Queen Sarah (only when done properly)
moody/jealous GK
really terrifying dark!Jareth
Light/humorous Jareth (these two jareths should not be in the same fic)
PLOT TWISTS
GK sometimes looking different (my personal favorite is a suit, a cane, and a ponytail)
This picture
Well-researched mythology/folklore (not anywhere near a requirement, but always, always cool.)
Dreams/sex dreams
sarah wearing fluffy shirts
Jareth has character development too
Using bog as/part of a curse word
Sarah retaining above-ground normalcy
Pillow pit
Sarah's conflicting inner voice (it's a weakness of mine)
(note that some of these things I've seen a lot of and still like, and some of them I rarely see)
No, Don't:
Sarah returns to the Labyrinth at the beginning of the fic and slowly (re)discovers her feelings for the GK from there. ((It's not always bad, in fact I've read some that are quite good, but it's pretty overdone))
Sarah is/gets pregnant (this is actually a trope that i would love to see less of everywhere)
Sarah in a job that's out of character!!!
any fae/seelie/what-have-you side characters with ridiculous names and/or personalities
magical Sarah (It's a nice thought, but keeping her 100% mortal (at least for a bit) makes for a more interesting story. Not that it couldn't be done well.)
Out of character Sarah/general bad fic writing. (I think there's a lot of liberties that can be taken with her character (especially grown-up Sarah), and I've seen it veer off in a lot of different directions, but there are a couple fics that I've started that just make me want to punch the fic in it's figurative face and yell, "NO, THAT'S NOT SARAH THAT'S SELF-INSERTION DON'T LIE TO YOURSELF YOU TWAT.") ((which of course there's nothing wrong with, I just don't want to read it))
weird rape-y stuff (makes for a good dark fic, but always leaves me sick to my stomach)
and of course I ALWAYS love being totally surprised by something new.
sorry i wrote so much junk. I just got going and wrote everything I could think of. Most of it is brain-spew. (Also, I have yet to read your fics, if that will have any impact on your thoughts)
