Laevetain quest was the one that gave me hope. I did it after Gilberta's one, so my expectations were extremely low.
But her quest was not only really good stand-alone story, it is also plays important part in Endmin's character development. The thing that connects Laevetain an Endmin - their memory loss. Not only both of them are amnesiacs, they both have a predecessor - and people have expectations based on that.
I always felt a little uneasy with how both characters and narrative treat Endmin's amnesia. He literary has no memories of the past - so he is a new person without any experience, without regrets or connections. And he is surrounded by people that see him as his past self, they knew him and expect him to be the same person. Endmin has no chance of figuring out himself among his predecessor's friends.
And, understandably, main story (so far) needs him to always be up for a task. No questions asked, no feelings involved - we have an apocalypses on our hands. And this strategy works fine when we are meeting new people - like Chen Qianyu or Wulfgard. But when we meet someone that past Endmin knew - for me, personally, - it always flops. I always feel forced into a dynamic with this new person that I just met. (Ardashir is an exception because he pretends for Endmin to not know him. Also it seems like we may see a development regarding Endmin's beliefs)
Like, who are you? Why should i care about you when you are the least interesting part of a side quest that isn't even yours? And stop calling me professor, neither me nor Endmin taught you shit.
And all of my problems are addressed in Laevetain's quest. She is also has no memories of her past, she is a reconvener - so she has abilities and looks of Surtr - but she is a special case, she doesn't have Surtr's memories. So she is risking her life again and again in order to find something from her past life.
Endmin and Laevetain have a lot in common - that is obvious. And not only they understand each other on a very deep level, they also can support each other in unique ways. Like how Perlica thinks that Laevetain should get out of dangerous place, but Endmin helps her go deeper to retrieve her memories. because he understands just how much those memories mean to her. And Laevetain helps Endmin with self-doubt - any other character would be too blinded by past-Endmin's actions to understand his current emotions.
And this deep connection feels genuine. We helped Laevetain, we deserve her trust, and she deserves our admiration in return.
That was an excellent quest
