in 15x17, dean breaks down insisting that they have to kill chuck or he will keep them tap dancing forever.

in 15x10, in his dream sequence dean tap dances with a lamp, a symbol of the light in his life. the light that chuck is trying to snuff out and he performs the tap dance rountine to irving aaronson’s let’s misbehave.

the lyrics can line up pretty well with cas and dean. it takes me back all the way back to 4x22 when chuck tells dean and cas “you’re not in this story” and cas declares “we’re making it up as we go.” and this is long before chuck’s true identity as god is revealed.

cas who famously has a crack in his chassis and always misbehaves. which going back to 15x17, chuck points out to cas in the same conservation he has with dean and team free will above, echoing what naomi had told cas in 8x21.

in his dream, garth is leading him in the dance number before dean takes over on his own and eventually finds himself slow dancing with a lamp before blowing it a kiss.

earlier in this episode, it’s shown he’s longing for the life that garth has. he wants a partner to share his life with.

and at the end of the episode, he watches wistfully as garth and bess dance through the window.

dean wants to dance, he just doesn’t want to tap dance for chuck. he wants to dance with a partner. he wants to dance with cas.

Yeah and at one point Dean gets told by a werewolf dentist that he has a shit ton of cavities because he’s no longer God’s special princess and he needs to be put under to get them all fixed so he has a vivid anesthesia dream where he’s doing a tap number and…hey where are you going? I haven’t even gotten to the part about the speculated symbolism of the lamp he’s dancing with!

thinking about lampstiel again (as one does) and there’s something very special about the fact that while cas is often represented as light in general, it’s most frequently a lightbulb, streetlight, etc. all man made objects. the angel of the lord with a crack in his chassis, he’s always had too much of a soft spot for humanity it bleeds into him

even his first entrance, blowing out the lights in the barn. this is the most he’s ever been a good soldier of heaven and still we see the first inklings of connection he has with humanity (dean) even if he’s trying as hard as he can to not have them.
