went to see john mellancamp with my mom tonight aka the poor man’s bruce springsteen (<- my dad thought that was hilarious when i said that) and it was really good

i have to say there were some wild characters and some real forced patriotism that seemed very out of place. i’ve literally never been to a concert venue where they blasted the pledge of allegiance before the show but this place did and my mom and i were some of the only ones who didn’t stand and there were people looking at us some type of way like we were the weird ones.

it was kinda crazy tho bc a good amount of the audience didn’t seem to match up with john mellencamp’s vibe at all. i don’t know much about him, but from what i know he is very liberal. his opening song called out police brutality and the ice raids within the first verse and he also called out trump’s facism and big business. and a lot of people did cheer for all of that, but there were still some fools in the background chanting “usa usa usa!”

it reminds me a lot of how bruce springsteen’s born in the usa is taken to be as some patriotic song about american pride when it’s literally meant to be ironic and is clearly criticizing america. there were people were taking john mellencamp’s pink houses to be some american anthem. i told my mom outkast was right as always “y’all don’t wanna hear me, you just wanna dance.”

tldr: john mellencamp is cool and calls out corruption in america in multiple songs, but some of his fans still somehow have an american flag up their ass (also sorry for misspelling your name in the original post mr. mellencamp)

oh so i found out why they did the pledge of allegiance at the concert last night my dad said apparently it’s state law to say the pledge at this art center since the 80s when sinead o’connor (my queen) refused to do the pledge before her show
